thread insert basically fell apart so can't tighten the plug back up anymore, lovely.

Could be the thread insert isn't conducting heat out of the plug?

They were spark plug specific inserts, but knowing my luck that could easily be the culprit. What are my options at fixing it?

Car is getting sorned for now, don't have patience or will to deal with it now.

If you don't want to risk, find a new head. This trial end error with inserts might cost more at the end. Find a decent head, rebuild it and its done. But still you'll need to find the main reason why it happened. Faulty injectors, bad ecu setup, etc etc.

I am quite certain it will be to do with the insert that was used. Spark plug most likely runs way hotter than it should and destroys itself.

Head will most likely be coming off and most likely will be replaced rather than fixed.

That's the right decision and i'm pretty sure that you will avoid a ton's of potential problems by replacing the head.

Car won't be in my ownership for long I'm afraid, but I want to fix her properly for whoever is the new owner.

I will take head off as soon as I can and go to few engine shops and see what they think.

I have a spare injector I could use for 3rd cylinder, and I'll check the soldering and log injector connections.

Weird thing is car was running perfect upto the point when the plug died.

Nothing exciting. Bit I've purchased a second low mileage head. I don't know whether car will stay in my ownership or not therefore I wanted to do it properly. Waiting for valve compression tool to arrive so I can dismantle both heads and get new one throughly washed before putting all back together.

That's what I used first time I stripped thread, and it melted spark plug so this time I'll do it properly with a good head.

Head cleaned and I am very happy with it. Very good condition now the time consuming process of putting it all back together.
