The RS6 engine is only slightly heavier than an S2 / RS2 one, the S8 one IS lighter than the S2 / RS2 units. Most of the extra mass is aluminium, as is the block. It is also shorter than the 5 zyl, (especially the RS6 unit) which means the effects on handling will be minimal.
I think your RS4 option is superb. I really can't wait to see the pics . THe RS6 engine is massive. There will be some 700bhp kits coming out for the RS4 engine next year!!
An ally block would be ideal for the S2 5 zyl. If you can find one (I am searching the breakers)!! It would definately be impossible/extremely impractical to bore the 5pot ally block because of the cylinder pitch in that material.

Yep, there's a typ89 coupe quattro with a normally aspirated 4,2 l V8 here in Finland. Not a bad alternative at all considering the weight. But there's still some magic in the 20vT.

Lee, look for an early 10V turbo from an Ur quattro, about 1980 - 81). I had one, UYS 8 W and it had an aluminium block. ( these were left over from the Group B era). These can be used in the 20V turbo engine, with suitable mods, i.e oil pump, oilways etc.
I knew that quite few of the competition aluminium blocks spilled into production cars. Did they only go into one model? I though they ended up all over the place in all sorts of cars. Oh, to find one! I'll keep looking.

If you do find one be carefull, there has been talk of porosity in these S1 alloy blocks.
Thanks. Guess it might be worth doing some Xrays if I find one. I know some firms who have done this kind of work for me in the past. Probably worth it especially if the output is going to be increased too.

The ally block appeared in the road going ur so as the engine could be homologated for rally use. capacity wise it is actually 2133cc, and the steel liners are cast in not sleeved, once they have been rebored to 3rd oversize they are scrap.
Yep Lee, almost all of them crack! They have been used on all sport quattros and 70% of them have already been replaced with cast iron blocks. Story has it that they have also been used in some Audi 100 5Es, i.e. 2.1l NA engine...

Audi had a warranty recall that as the cars with these engines hit the 60,000 mile service that the engine be taken out and replaced with a iron block item.
Not many were changed though due to the cars failing to stick with the dealers.
The aluminium blocks are not tolerant of high temperatures either. Mine overheated once, and I thought it had blown the head gasket, as power was down. On stripping it down, it turned out the steel liner for # 5 zyl had somehow "sunk" below the block surface, and was no longer sealing. I had to have the block decked, together with the liners.
Not good if you want to keep the comp. ratio stock. Mine had studs as opposed to head bolts, and they ARE mega expensive!
