Ok, so I fitted the kit a while ago. It was going to be an absolute pain to do it under the dash, so I put it in behind the rear right door card, where the pump is. I checked the wires coming from the door locks and accessed them right below the pump. So it’s now snugly in there and working happily. I’ll add a picture later, as I don’t have one to hand right now.

I’ve moved on to sorting out the door cards now as I’d rather fix them and the headlining before putting the interior back in. Ages ago I bought the Recaro leather front seats (from a golf) and got 4 cabby door cards thrown in. Unfortunately the rears were useless so I cut off the leather and threw the rest away. The fronts have several cracks and some of the tabs on the back are broken off, so they wouldn’t secure to the door well anyway. Plus, it seems that they are slightly different where the card curls around the door edge above the lock.

So I hit upon the cunning plan of swapping the leather over. The cloth on my doors is a bit saggy, so as much as I’m concerned I’ll balls it up, I’m going to have a crack anyway

So the short version is..

I carefully took the leather off the donor cards using a paint scraper and a hairdryer. Dunno if the heat was really needed.


Peeled the cloth off in 2 layers. Second layer came away as the famous nasty yellow stuff on a thin film.




Then I cleaned up the sticky residue with a cloth and thinners.




I have some donor leather without foam backing from the cabby cards. Think it’s actually from the bolster parts. Needs softening though. I’m going to replace the headlining with dark grey fake alcantara/suede stuff. So I need to decide whether i do the front cards with the donor leathers (should work well) and the rears with the donor leather without foam backing. Or should I do all 4 cards with the same as the headlining.

See my edited post above. I haven’t decided yet. The fronts will work well, perfect for swapping over. Rears, I’m not sure about. I even considered doing the rears with the fake alcantara/suede and leaving the fronts leather. That might be a bit weird though.

You can add a layer of thin foam to the ones without.

Yeah, I reckon I need to try to find thin foam while I’m getting the headlining.
I even briefly considering being really daft and getting some tartan fabric for the headlining and door cards!
A bit like the early golfs etc.
