  • That's going to keep you busy.
I had the same issue with storage so invested in some second hand industrial racking shelves.

When you take a car apart, it's surprising just how much space everything takes.

    • It's amazing how much they can pack stuff on a car. The subframe will propably be installed back for a little while to make it easier to push the car around. My plan is to do the welding work outside if weather allows so no sparks are flying around the garage.

      • If you were local you could borrow my dolly. Custom made for an S2 Avant.
I would weld inside. Just clear any combustible material and have a hose ready just in case.

        • A dolly would be great to have.

Hopefully I can clear some space inside the garage at least around the area where welding would happen. I have a pile of scrap body panels stored inside that have to go. I also have water hose inside so I can keep it right next to me if I decide to weld inside.

          • Today I removed the trunk bottom pieces. You also get to look inside the chassis rails. Some minor surface rust inside but nothing major.

I did a quick trial fitting for the new parts.

Next I have to cut out the rusted sections in the mudguards and then I can start welding new parts back in.

            • Today was welding day. A good friend borrowed me his mig.

Left trunk bottom piece has an exhaust mounting bracket welded to it. The old was heavily corroded so I made a new one and welded it on.

Then all the replacent parts were welded in

Tomorrow I have to clean up the welds, give the inside of the mudguards a coat of epoxy paint and then I can begin to fit the quarter panels.

              • So I got almost all the welding prep work done. All lap joints have weld through primer applied and the quarter panels got test fitted to make sure all the panel gaps match. It took a bit of fiddling but everything is starting to line up nicely. It's a little scary to weld them in place since when it's done, there's no moving them!

                • I got a couple hours today at the garage and got the insides of the mudguards painted, so everything is ready for rear quarter panels to be welded on.

I never had the luggage compartment tie down points at the rear. So I purchased the needed brackets to attach the tie down points to. I was only able to find them for the right hand side . So I bought two of them and with a little cutting and welding I was able to make it work.

                    • Today I (hopefully) finished all the welding work. Both rear quarter panels are now welded in place. Welds still need to be ground flat and then a coat of etch primer to protect the bare metal surfaces.

The edge of the mudguard has seam sealer applied

Also the rear reinforcement panel got welded on

                        • I finally got myself to finding a local place that sells dry ice so I could remove the old sound deadening. This is around 15kgs of dry ice but I propably could get away with just 10kg.

After spreading the ice I just let it sit for a few minutes and then hit the car floor fit rubber mallet. The old deadening just flakes off.

                          20240513_095718.jpg

The ice creates quite a lot of visible "smoke". It looked pretty cool when it escaped from the holes at the bottom

                          20240513_104439.jpg

This is the end result. Some glue residue was left but I'll have to try a decal eraser wheel on them. All this plus the boot floor was done in about two hours. Even if the ice was relatively expensive, the time it saves compared to removing all this using some mechanical removing is massive.

                          • Did the ice do anything on the rubber stoneship protection?

                            • It flakes off at some points but not completely. Next job is to turn the car sideways and scrape the old underbody seal off. Would have made it a lot easier if the old underbody sealant have flaked off the same time. Of course if you are planning to do the same job without touching the underside the dryice might not be the best way.
