Hmmmmmm. Interesting reading! Think I'll be having the top back off the tank next week then. When this car is running, occasionally there is a fuel smell around the right rear wheel. So far id dismissed this for being linked as id wrongly fixated on a timing issue up till recently.

Could be a number things, e.g. rusted tank leaking, Item 5 leaking, overflow hose (not shown)..

My dad had one that took him ages to sort, turned out to be a fag or crisp packet in the fuel tank, partially or fully blocking, it was pretty random. (and also WTF?)

Oh, no. Another thing I have to my list of things that will fail on your AAN and strand you at the side of the road.

          10. Random fag and crisp packages blocking fuel pump inlet. Very common.

But then again, based on the length of this thread, it can't be ruled out until the tank is opened and the pump is pulled.

At WOT which fueling sensors are used for mixture control? Am I right in thinking that the O2 sensor is ignored in this situation?
Sorry I'm im repeating myself, I just want to quadruple check that the car is trying to make correct mixture!

So long as my work goes to plan tomorrow I'll open the tank tomorrow afternoon. Very strange how the mixture changes sometimes with a gear change!?!?

At WOT no fueling sensors, e.g. O2 sensor, are involved. The ECU is just going off its internal fueling, load and RPM maps. I suppose, to be technical, the knock sensors, detecting detonation due to lean fuel mixture, would still be involved but they are involved all the time, not just at WOT.

Does it use TPS and MAP Dave? Does an injector on time of 16ms sound normal-ish for WOT at 4,000rpm? I know all cars are different but I'm trying to determine if mine is 'a mile' out.

Just watching my vag-com video I posted on here and I realise I may have been miss reading it all along. I assumed that the 'absolute pressure' for for the altitude sensor (Christ knows why!!!) but I now realise this is boost. Despite my dash saying 2.2 at wot vag-com is stuck at 998.8 mbar at ALL times

I would have thought 998.8 mBar would be atmospheric. However it should change with the weather, lower on a rainy day and higher on sunny days. If the dash is reading 1.2 then the ecu is definitely seeing boost.

Anyway you can check this, pop the top off the altitude sensor and gently push the diaphragm in. you should see the vagcom reading change.

There is some interesting stuff at the end, re: no full boost at WOT.

No no. I thought that reading on vag-com WAS boost Dave. I read a bit and now realise it's ATMOSPHERIC pressure NOT boost pressure. Oh well :-(

You need to do some screen captures and post up these VAG-com results so we can read what you are seeing and check/confirm what you are seeing.

All that said, I *think* I am going to get the prize for finding the answer to your problem. "998" millibars is likely the default from a broken MAP sensor.
