Thanks chaps, the firing order is correct, it was when I first got it. That's an interesting point about the leads. I'll try the same plug with both leads. I'm not sure wether the could strap is there if I'm honest. My brain is aching with this car. I have checked the timing many times , I will check again. Thanks again,

I have had a very quick look today, I can't see an earth strap from chassis to block/box. I'll need to rectify that. There is one from cam cover to slam panel, another from cam cover to coil and a 3rd from cam cover to the firewall/ rain tray.

Could just use a jump lead to verify if its an earth issue.

Good shout Newsh. Looking at library pics there should be one from chassis to gearbox mount just below the brake bomb. Well it's not there if that's correct.

I started by fitting a new ground strap between the chassis and block. I instantly had a far better cranking starter motor. I then noticed that I had a "no spark" situation again.
By fluke I found that the main harness to the ecu was loose. So I connected that properly and we had spark again.
Although the spark was still not from the electrode to the ground. However happy I now had a good strong regular spark I focused on the intake.
I put my pressure tester on and it wouldn't hope anything at all. Frustrated I pulled all the boost hoses and intercooler off and tested each piece. No leaks. I then had a mate crank it over while I held a flat palm over the throttle body. Next to no vacuum. I had always been concerned that someone had used washers to stack out the bolts holding the intake manifold on. So I pulled the manifold, the bolts were bottomed out and still not tight. The gasket showed that fuel had been leaking from 2/3 and combustion marks on 4/5. I guess this was from the back firing in the inlet.
Anyway I trimmed the bolts down and refitted with a new gasket. I then put my palm over the throttle body while s mate cranked the car. Result loads of vacuum.
I re connected everything turned the key with an injector out. She fired on 4 and the loose injector sprayed a good conical jet. I reseated the injector and turned the key, she roared to life. A quick tweak on the co2 screw and the engine smoothed out.
I changed the fuel contaminated oil and left it to run up to temp and then revved right through to redline very nicely.
She now starts instantly idles well and revs cleanly. The auxillery air valve is still jammed but seems to make very little difference. Over the moon!!!

The earth straps up the top are all thin ones, probably mostly for emc, it's the fat one down the bottom that takes the starter current.

That a weird thing with those IM bolts, an inlet leak was on the suspect list though.

I spent 10 minutes dancing around the workshop like I was Jamiroquai on speed... Space cowboy. My mate thought it was hilarious, the lads from surrounding businesses a me out because I was shouting so loudly. Plus the rather loud inline 5 was roaring.. I'm still smiling now... Thanks to everyone for the help. I've learned so much about these cars..

I knew the main earth needs to go to the block and be a substantial cable. The starter is very grateful as a result.
Having a full day without being distracted by 4/5 other jobs was a big help too. Someone used nice stainless M8 6mm bolts but couldn't be arsed to trim them down and used 6 washer per bolt to pack it out! Probably the same person who did the fuel feed and return lines up back to front.
A careful methodical approach has paid dividends.

Well done that man, I remember the feeling of satisfaction when you crack a fault that has been bugging you for ages.l, been there many a time. Must remember the hand over throttle body trick for checking manifold leaks.
