I really want to crack on with the engine but need to do the headline before the weather changes.

As it came off



Sticky horrible goo under the material



Took ages to carefully scrap off


I couldn’t find anything that would melt the glue. Tried thinners, meths, petrol and acetone. Just have to slowly scrap.

New lining cut ready for glue.


I will finish it tomorrow.

Had a look at some of the wires and found some damage that needs fixing



I was confused when I went to refit the thermostat

This pipe in my box of parts appears to be off another car!
(Don’t worry, I found the right one)

Well done Dave, you are really cracking on
I recommend getting as much done as you can before the clocks change and it gets cold

Have a really good check of the wiring harnesses, connectors, terminals, everything - most are well past their best and can cause all kinds of odd electrical gremlins and running faults.

Thanks Alex. Most of the wiring is pretty good considering. The section in the pic has received some repairs and is done up with insulation tape so I'm going to take it apart and remake properly with solder joints and heat shrink insulation.

I need a turbo fitting kit if anyone has one knocking about for sale? Cant find one in the UK. Autodoc have one but it will take 10 days. Also, still looking for an ABY airbox

Tip - never use solder. It can crack with vibration and cause all kinds of problems. Use crimps

I didn't know that about the solder!
Seals, gaskets, studs and nuts.

Solder and glue lined heatshrink is perfectly good in an automotive application, especially inline where multiple crimps can end up getting very bulky.

Crimps are also very good, but the bog stock blue/red stuff isn't that great, especially when crimped with el cheapo crimp tools. Likewise a bad solder joint is also bad!

Of course you need good quality barrel crimps. You will never find solder in a pro motorsport harness for the reason I stated. Why do a 2nd rate job when you don’t have to?

Oh I understand that, but for most people, solder and glued heatshrink will outlast the owner as well as the car
