Garage and work tabel cleaned today. Will put new bearings in/torq it down and leave it to the machine shop who will measure the clearence of rods/main bearings. Also a honing of the block will be done. The previous owner already collected lots of new parts. The head has been serviced with new valve seals/valve guides and so on. Hopfully i can leave the engine parts for measuring/machining this week. Then the work with cleaning/painting engine block and parts starts.

The guy i bought it from have done a good job cleaning most of the engine parts. Happy for that.

Started to work on the engine today. Cleaning bearing surfaces and beraring caps. So tomorrow i will leave it to the engine shop for measurement of the clearences. They will also hone the cylinders, maybe resurface the block deck also to get a fresh surface for the head gasket.

      Bolts out from the conrod:
      45764-f19786b95db1f487058019bd0fef6638.jpg
I was using a hammer and a rod to knock out the old bolts. To insert the new ones i used the same metod at first but it was hard to get the new bolts in place. Much easier to put the bolt in place using the rod cap and nuts to force the new bolts in place.

While i was using the hammer/rod method to put the new bolts in place the piston slapped against my rod (gently) so i wasen't thinking much of it more then the sound it maked. But when i looked up i saw that the piston crown had got some bad marks.. Of course i will talk to the engine builder company what they think of it tomorrow, but i would also like to hear opinions from the forum.
What do you guys think of it? do i need a new piston or can i make up for my stupidity some how? Damn i feel angry right now..

Have fun with the rebuild. Hopefully it’s not too much of an issue with the piston damage. I expect it will cause over heating in that area, but I’m not an expert

Thanks! Yeah lots of cleaning and painting to do. I will probably get another used piston to replace it with. Most people says it won't effect anything if I smooth out the damaged area. We will see what I choose to do.

If the damage on the piston is only on the edge of it like it looks like in the picture, just file down the high spots and run it. That's nothing. But why the hammer, can't understand...

Yeah, i think i will look for a new piston, otherwise i will not be calm. Hard to explain the situation. I used a hammer and a rod to just drive down the rod bolts the first mm's and the piston slapped against the rod when i was knocking the bolts in, i didn't see it or reflected about it until i saw what happend.. Sometimes **** happens.

Apparently the pistons on the 1.8 golf are identical. Breakers yard calling?

Today was cleaning day.. Glas blasted most of the aluminium parts i'm going to send to paint next week. Looking for a colour as close to raw aluminium as possible (original look). Took me about 5 hours to finish but it will be so good looking when painted. Also picked up a timingbelt kit (RS2) with reinforced lower gear.
                  Some pics of todays work.

Before glas blasting, only did the aluminium parts today:

The parts will be painted so don't mind the coulour being a little bit different in the aluminium.

Also got myself a timing belt kit especially for RS2:

Hopfully i will have te engine back from the engine workshop tomorrow, then i can start with painting and cleaning of the engine block.

Dismantled the generator and glasblasted the stuff thats going to be painted. Tonight i also got all parts masked up for paint. Will leave it to the painter in a couple of weeks. Going to USA for vacation so i will have to wait until next paycheck to get the parts painted... Still waiting for my engine to get back from the engine machine shop. When i have the block back i will start with painting and cleaning of the block.
Parts waiting for paint all masked up:

Been busy with all kind of stuff. But i have done some things to the car/engine. Blasted and painted some more parts. For exampel pulleys, brackets and some water/crank case piping. The aluminium parts have not been sendt to the painter yet. I will have to wait with that until i get back from vaccation in the USA. Today i picked up my engine block/crank and conrods from the engine machine shop. The block have been honed and resurfaced. All clearences have been measured and are in to the spec. The crankshaft has been polished on the bearing surfaces. Everything looks good. So this weekend i will hopfully be able to clean and paint the block so it will be ready for assembly when i get home from my vaccation. I have to do a cleaning of the oil channels and so before the final assembly takes place.

Block waiting for cleaning and new paint:

                            Hi!
Today was a good but hard day. Started with work (on the work) a couple of hours and then directly to the garage for work on the engine.
Took the bearings out of the engine after measurement. Then started to clean the block from loose paint and rust. It takes for ever but what do you do.. After that i masked up the block up for paint. With the vacation to USA next week i want to finish the painting before i go there. I managed to get the first coat of paint on the engine. Will let it dry until tomorrow, then sand it down and put the black paint on it tomorrow. Looking forward to the fun stuff, putting it all toghether. But cleaning and painting parts takes a lot of time. So some pictures to follow from the work done today.

Engine block being cleaned from rust and loos paint:

Engine block primed and waiting to dry until tomorrow when it will be sanded down and painted medium shiny black:

Some stuff i painted last week:

Will post the result of the engine painting tomorrow! Now i'm going to take a beer or five
