  • I refurbished the rear diff many moons ago. One thing I hadn't done was to fit the actuator. I bought a new Mercedes one to replace the original that fell apart on re entry.
The fiddly bit was to cut a new thread on the actuator rod. Once done it all came together nicely.
Where possible, I've replaced everything with stainless.

    • Is the handbrake rod meant to go under this little bracket? It seems to hold it too close to the body. Can't see any other reason for it?

      • Subframe bushes pressed in.

New mounts, nuts and bolts. We are looking good.

I have new HD wishbones to go on.

The E10 pipe arrived and we are almost done there.

Everything there is pretty much stainless.

        • The brake calipers and carriers got an hour in the oven to cure the paint.

I got new subframe bolts and stainless washers.

The car was lowered slowly until everything lined up.

          Making good progress now.

                • I didn't think things were progressing that quickly but hey ho.
Now, this was a nice surprise. Whilst rummaging in my brakes draw I found these. Amazingly they are the correct size for the front callipers. They have been in that draw for many years and I can't remember what they were bought for. Maybe my wife's old Passat?

I managed to get new rear tie rods. Been in the box for about three years.
                  Apparently difficult to find now.

And apparently these ball joints too.

So today was wheel bearing day.
The struts needed quite a bit of cleaning before I could start work.

                  Bearings went in nicely.

Now I do have a set of Koni shocks but I came across these new old stock Boge shocks so decided to keep it oe.

They even have instructions you can understand!

Then new covers and bump stops fitted with new Meyle HD top bushes. I had new genuine slotted nuts as well.

As before, I added a little gearbox oil in each strut tube before fitting.
Time for dinner I think. Phew.

                  • Front shocks are also Boge.

                    All the struts are done.

                      • Brake seals went in nicely.

Not much else to report today. Spent most of it digging the engine out of it's hole where it has sat for three years!

                        • I didn't get much done today as I had to go shopping.
I did get the driveshafts on the rear. They have new cv joints, inner and outer.

And I forgot to say. When fitting the subframe bushes I used some sleeves made from concrete fixings. I couldn't get the right diameter stainless sleeve but these M12 are zinc plated and will do fine. You need to cut them to size.
They are a snug fit and take up the play in the M12 hole in the bushes. M10 bushes are nla. This trick works on the rear of the S2 Coupe as well.

Just scratching my head now as to where to start on the engine.

                          • Rear struts went in nicely. I found the easy way to do this is to drop the car on the ramp to the right height, put the driveshaft in the hub and the strut up in the housing supported underneath and slowly lower the car until the top bush is inside the housing. Then it sits there on its own while you get in the car to do up the top nut.

My home made top nut tool.

I did have a bolt shear when fitting the bottom tie rod ball joints. I think the threads were full on powder coat.

So I went around and cleaned all the threads up on both struts with a tap.

Abs sensors fitted with new plastic caps, brake shields and caliper carriers also fitted up with new bolts.

Engine moved to a better position so I can do some work on it.
