Ah so you finally told the world Andy!

Where did you get hold of the torque plate and bolts mate for machining?

I had to make the torque plate as I couldn't find anybody with one to suit the TDi's larger head studs. I spoke to Aelred about borrowing his, but when he checked the holes for the studs they were too small.
The bolts for holding it in place are just std M12 cap heads ( 12.9's ) got them from our nut & bolt supplier at work.

I had planned to use Aelreds torque plate but if it don't fit thats out the window. I must admit I hadn't asked him to check the stud hole size

Got the block back from the machine shop this week so I got the ARP studs and crank fitted so I could check the main bearing sizes

Turned like butter when torqued up

            Got the first piston fitted

JE Pistons and Sten Parner rods. Now the scary part, I have to grind the bottom of the bores to clear the rods. This is an example I found on the web

Yes, me too, but when I put the first piston & rod in it would not turn. On doing some more research on the net I found that the block does require grinding. Marco had to do his, it's just not mentioned in the thread, this is yours I'm told

Cool, I'll confirm that in pics when I strip the block

What CR did you go for on your JE pistons and what was the psiton volume?

How significant is to use a Torque plate?
                        Go Holset or Go RS4

I would always use a torque plate if you can, but the machine shop who did my rebore said it was not necessary as the block was so strong anyway.
They would ony use a torque plate when boring an engine with large bores, on a Yank V8 for instance, they said most german blocks, especially ones from late 80's early nineties are super strong from the factory. After these dates accountants started getting involved, and to a certain extent they lost the 'built like tanks' build quality.

Get some tape over those main bearing oil holes...

Hope you've got an air line to blow them out with.

Thats not my block, just an example of what I've got to do. Don't worry, when I do mine it will be well masked off.
