Overpowering
Overpowering engine blocks to the point of destruction was once fairly rare, but the explosion in popularity of aftermarket turbocharging/supercharging (a.k.a. "forced induction") and nitrous oxide (N2O) injection makes this a very real possibility for enthusiasts looking for more power. Before these technologies came to dominate the marketplace, engine horsepower was generally limited by the connecting rod's ability to withstand breaking at high RPM. Forced induction and nitrous work by increasing power throughout the engine's entire RPM range, making engine block strength the limiting factor. Stress-related cracking usually occurs in the area surrounding the engine's main crankshaft caps, known as the "webs." The webs act as a mounting point for the main caps, which secure the crankshaft to the block and bear most of the abuse.

By reading this my understanding is that you agree with my view Mr Tonka as he wasn't doing aftermarket turbocharging or running N2O .... ?

I have seen a fair few cambelt failures in my time in the Land Rover world, they tend to bend every valve, smash some of the followers, sometimes they snap the tappets and I have seen a few rocker shafts in half.
But to date have never been aware of any blocks that have cracked or suffered any ill effects after just a top end rebuild.
Out of interest Andy, is the main journal diameter of the diesel crank larger than the petrol Crank?

Started working on a replacement block, first job was to check this one for cracks! Then mask all the holes and notch the bottom of the bores for rod clearance
Found out that the darleks head is NLA from Audi, mine is pretty beat up so I've ordered a new core plug and will have a go at making one
Also wanted to do something with the core plug that feeds coolant to the turbo ( or is it the return? ) as mine has always weeped, ÂŁ25 from Audi, sod that I'll make one of those too
Drill a hole in the core plug
And weld it in place
Job done
Just need to make up the line one the turbo is mounted
Got the back of the block marked up for the coolant socket

As a precaution I will get the block line bored with the ARP's as they have a higher torque seting than std boltssigpic

Thanks
The paint was just regular Satin black car paint from Halfords, I just scuffed up the plastic first and then de-greased them, primed and top coat.sigpic
