Dont get me started on ebay, had a bad experience with a set of wheels for the 80, but in total from the seller and ebay got £48 back and kept the rims so...
Watching this thread very closely i am soon to be going the RS2 route. Im thinking of changing all the ball joints, wishbones and fitting poly bushes before going ahead. Love the brakes i got a feeling once i have all my kit fitted my HI-Specs wont be up to it. After eading through the thread i had not considered the SM Flywheel, what are the advantages of this?
3'' Longlife Exhaust, Koni Adjustables, H&R Springs, Full RS2 Setup with Mr Nugents RS2 Chips (just need the RS2 Airbox)
Ditch it and go for the 2871R - no need for uprated rods and you'll have 500Nm and well over 400bhp outta the box. Oh and those green injectors look a bit kiech (externally anyway) - get some Siemens 550s in their and you are ready with stock cams for lots of fun.
For the money saved on rods get a SM flywheel and uprated clutch to support some monster launches and you'll surpise an awful lot of people. That sort of power and torque in an S2 that is 400kg lighter than the UrS4 is going to have you out shopping for new underpants !
Check with Diesel Des on the spec he ordered for his 2871 - I'm not 100% sure what compressor trim it was. I should have an alleged compressor map here somewhere.
Keep stock cams like his AAN for that smooooth power delivery IMO.
Info I have is 71mm compressor 52 trim (fifty two) and 0.60 A/R - but please check with Des... He was one of the 1st to buy this turbo for an Audi application but never got it all hooked up until mid last year. I ran it on a derivative of RS2 software for a while until getting brave enough to try the bigger injectors in 4Q08.
I always like the RS2 route for it's 'plug and play' simplicity, but what with that homefries chip Paul has got in development, and a confirmation that the GT2871 surge doesn't cause issues, the only items are the clearance of the hotside, downpipe modification required, and inlet boot - all of which have been overcome.
I'd be tempted to buy new on the turbo to avoid issues as above - in which case, may as well splash out an extra few hundred and go with the 2871. It's a real shame the exchange rate is so pants atm!
Seems the 2871 compressor map is really conservative... Des could only aggrevate it into some surging with lots of left-foot braking and heavy right foot at the same time at low road speeds to artificially load up the turbo outside its normal operating range... You just don't get that loading when driving normally. So we found it OK to operate beyond the surge line presented on paper. Des has lots of experience testing turbos in a past life and wasn't surprised that the Garrett had some margin in there - probably more to do with warranties and end of life performance and such...
