Cheers Kit, it should all be worth it in the end, first few will be fun, I imagine after 20 I will not be feeling so enthusiastic.

Had an inspired idea at 02:00 this morning, but resisted going out to try it until after work.

      Thanks to Mr Bernoulli;

      The £5 soda blaster

This was done in a couple of seconds

A couple of seconds in the exuahst port

Stripped of the dirt, then the paint in the middle

      Its gona be awesome

Needs to be done outside as it makes a hell of a mess.

Pretty cool as its not aggressive, and dissolves in water.

Next thing I want to try is the same thing, but using water, DIY vapour blaster? Or hooking it up to a hose.

I will need to experiment on nozzle size, but seems to work.

That works a treat, great idea! I can imagine it makes a mess, how quick does it get through the soda?

Thinking about it I purchased a bargain spot blaster set up from Lidl ages ago and have never got round to try it out as I half expected it to be rubbish. Think I'll dig it out over the weekend and see how well it works.

Going to be doing this soon only with one cylinder less refreshing a KR head for my Golf.

To do what is pictured used about half the little £1 tub.

You can get 25kg for £25 on ebay. If you have an agricultural feed store nearby even cheaper as it is a supplement for some animal.

Let me know how you get on, if it works the media container would be neat.

I am going to put the hose in the bottom of a big container and just fill it with soda in the meantime.

Best bit is it just washes away outside, no sand everywhere.

And you just wash the head and it dissolves, no grit left to destroy the engine.

              Made a mess outside today

              Worked well I think.

The nozzle size and hose size/ratio is important. The first one worked well, but the little needle nozzle broke. I tried a hosepipe and a larger nozzle, but that did not work at all, possibly too large to create a vacuum to lift the soda, also less of a blast stream.

I used a smaller lift pipe, into a slightly larger pipe, twice the diameter of the nozzle, that worked as pictured above.

Just straight off the compressor at 150psi (that is what it has been set at since my dad gave it to me).

The blasting just took a few minutes, it eats air at a ridiculous rate though, lots of waiting for the compressor to catch up.

Now looking at big belt drive compressors

I think a lot of experimentation with nozzle sizes is needed, my first smaller one seemed more concentrated/powerful.

Also cut the end of the tube at an angle so the pickup cant get blocked, and have it at the bottom of the tub.

That is awesome man. I was actually watching a guy on youtube making the very same thing a few days ago. I also have a lidl sandblaster that was a bit crap with sand at 90psi but ill dig it back out n try upping the pressure and using soda for my head as well.

Cool, let me know how it works out.

After putting up the Christmas tree, throwing tinsel at it, taking the tinsel off and putting it back on "properly" etc

                      Back to the garage

                      Valves oot

                      No cracks

Exhaust ports are being a PITA to clean, 2 goes with Mr Muscle, and a wire wheel and they are still carbon.

My thoughts on porting so far

Step in the exhaust port-anti reversion? Or turbulence? Blend it or leave it?

On the intake there is a ridge between the valve seat bore, and the port, I would like to smooth that out.

I am going to reference Tony's work in this thread

In the process of cleaning, resealing, lapping, decking, water manifolding a 7a head. Was looking at the ports right under each valve seat, and the look pretty shitty. I know I could do a light dremel job and make it way nicer than whats there. I dont wanna go to crazy, and unmatch the flows...

After quite a few doses of Mr Muscle, diesel and a quick trip to the jet wash (works wonders )

I can now see metal rather than carbon sludge.

Hopefully one more clean and its porting time.

Looking nice and clean mate. My head was flowed by Brian Rickets or one of his minions and I'm 99% sure the shoulders in the exhaust ports are gone completely, I remember having a good look before I put back together and it seemed like a very tidy job. Unfortunately I don't have any photo's and I've only ever seen the exhaust ports so I can't help with any more info

                            Thanks Kit.

So far, top untouched, lower started blending with a carbide cutter (amazing to use)

Top and bottom blended, and smoothed with a drum sander

Transition from the valve seat into the bowl smoother with a drum sander

I need to get some long shank sanding rolls or similiar next.

I opened the oil pickup, little bits of broken plastic, from the splash guard in the cam cover I assume (it was loose).

                              Stem seals

Intake valves fitted, 8 exhaust to go (ran out of disc brake cleaner, I was giving anything a final wash off before assembly)

Those collets are a bit fiddly with big fingers.

Sump cleaned up, Mr Muscle again!

Next thing is main seals, what do people normally use to press in the rear? Its massive!

Also I tried removing the timing belt idler from a spare pump housing by screwing a bolt to push it off, and the bolt just got mangled. Any suggestions? I was going to try preloading it with the bolt, then **** it with a hammer to shock it, or lever ?

The idle roller can be a sod to get off, if it doesn't come away with careful leverage and taps with rubber mallet then I thread bolt in and use a slide hammer, if you have a welder and a metal object that weighs a couple of KG's with a hole in you should be able to knock something up quite quickly and easily.

Your oil pick looks a lot better than mine did mate but it's never nice to see foreign objects in the sump, I didn't bother with the plastic splash guard over the inlet cam on JP's advice as they go brittle and fall to pieces, fitted a new oil filler cap and don't get any leakage.

If they won't go in square with careful use of a rubber mallet and the old seal as drift to help protect the new one then I normally fit big ring seals using a disc of hard wood cut to the right diameter with a jigsaw.

Your making good progress there are you planning on getting it back together over Christmas?

Oh yes the collects are a fiddle, sausage fingers make things tricky, my right thumb is numb which doesn't help much at all so I tend use a magnetic screwdriver and a non magnetic pokey thing to fit them
