    Finally got a day off that was not raining/snowing/below zero;

    So engine out

    Clutch off, seems fairly healthy

    Flywheel off

    And beside its replacement

    Do like!

    Also swapped over fpr and line, distributor, 2 pin oil pressure sender and some other bits and bobs.

    Need to make up a crank looking tool to do the timing belt, bit of pipe with a cut out (or cut out box) welded onto a bar locking onto the snub mount should do the trick and be cheap.

      nice work Andy, I'm assuming you never got to the bottom of the low oil pressure then?
      Defo whip the sump off the replacement and give it a real good clean out, i've seem some really filthy slime in a couple of 7As now, they don't seem to get the regular oil changes that most S2s get

        The original engine that was swapped in came out of a crash damaged car, and has already had the head gasket changed and then the head changed since it was swapped in due to vomiting issues. I picked up a running 20v engine cheap so just going to do timing belt, oil change etc and throw it in.

        The old engine will get stripped down out of curiosity and also as it could have some useful parts for the s2

        Cars history is spread about

        And its disaster for sale thread is on nogsport as well.

            It means I have a potential mechanic (if he's willing to do homers) close by (if my proposed purchase of a 100 quattro avant comes off)

                  Good to hear you are still alive and not frozen somewhere .

                  Next projects will be 3b b3, abz b4 and s2 saloon depending on which car/parts come up for sale when I have cash waiting.

                    Yeah sure.

                    What you got your eye on 100 2.8 q?

                    Have you thought about a 100 s4 avant? 20vt go and lots of space, or are you trying to remain semi sensible/not have the wife kill you?

                      I'm picking up a 2.8 100q Avant next week. Really good nick. Steve recommended Istoo from here to have a look for me (this despite him organising his entire family to de-camp to SE Asia for a year). Good lad, according to him it's more or less mint.

                      I did consider Istoo's S4, but it's just a step too far in terms of running costs. I ran an S2 for 4 years remember

                      It'll be needing a service and timing belt is imminent. Could you manage this? Steve mentioned his mate Doad could help too.

                      Come to think of it I could get a spin in the resurrected flying machine at the same time eh.. :mischeif:

                      Attached a wee pic. Cosmetically I think it needs clear indicators, repeaters and replace the wood with carbon, if available. I've also got a set of S6+ 17"s that'll bolt straight on.. waheyy. Also, depending on what I get for the pissrat, then an LPG conversion would be imminent.

                        Swapped the flywheel over and bolted the replacement engine into the 80

                        Started to look at the other engine;

                        First thing was a seized sump bolt, rounded off, so;

                        Even with that I couldn't undo it by hand, had to hammer it free

                        Then pulled the sump;

                        Still has an oil pick up pipe

                        Bit of gasket in the pick up screen, wouldn't have thought one bit on its own would cause a major issue? Will have a look and see if there is any more in the pickup/sump.

                        Sooty exhaust ports

                        Intake

                        Pulled the cams and lifters.

                        Will probably pull the head tomorrow, need to get some big box section or pipe to make a crank locking tool.

                        Anybody ever try a 7a exhaust cam in a 3b on a generic chip?

                            There is another member on here who changed the 3b/7a exhaust cams between both cars and reported good results on both without remaps.

                              Andy those look like some some pretty heavy deposits - the 7A I recently took out of my coupe had far less build-up than that (circa 175k miles on it) and the reason I swapped it was because the valve guides were worn and it was burning a little oil.
