Sorry to hear about your issues Des. I hope you get it sorted fast and easy/cheap.

IIRC you only need to connect 12V on the wideband. The ECU takes the 12V it needs from the Motronic loom.

Also check the 12V and ground connections on the engine. maybe you get a bad contact when you turn the ignition from on to start and the VEMS does not boot correctly and thats why it crashes.

Thanks for the advice. I have checked the power and ground connections many times and they are good. Since I changed the power connections to run from 1 relay it seemed to be better but yesterday after the engine issue the ecu again failed to run the fuel pump and the laptop can't talk to the ecu. I need to force it into the boot loader to rescue it again.

So as the car is off the road until I have the engine fixed I will AGAIN send the ecu to vems for testing and repair and detail my issue to them and as the ecu is currently locked they should see the problem. If they can't find a issue I will ask to have the main board replaced. If I can't get them to do that I will maybe try max ecu.


Anyhow I will take a night off from working at the car as I'm kinda feed up with it at the moment.

Do you still use the original fuse box? If yes how is it connected?

My avant had 2 wires from the battery. A big one for the starter and a smaller one for the fusebox.

When I striped my car i thought it was a very good idea to use one big wire from the battery to the starter and connect the wire from the fusebox to the big starter cable at the dashboard.

But of course it didn't workout as good as I thought vemstune crashed as soon as I started the car and some more problems. after that I used a new cable from the battery to the fusebox and everything was fine.

Interesting. I run 1 heavy wire from the starter to a 400amp fuse box which supplies the starter and the stock fuse box. But my problem happens when the ignition is switched on and the starter hasn't run so maybe this isn't the problem.

my setup is like this
battery in trunk,big cable from battery to a distribution point in engine room,from there big cable to starter(+-1m long)
2 big red cables from distribution point to fusebox
1 big red cable from starter to alternator
i never had problems with vems with my setup

I think you are right. Mine disconnected when i started the car.

This was the old situation:

i never had problems with vems with my setup

This is similar to mine. As the fault happens so randomly it's a pain. I wish it would fail completely so it's easy to find.

No. Just beer bottle tops opened tonight... Oil I drained out just smelt of oil. Nothing bad.

Number 3 big end spun. The rest seem ok ish but have some signs of stress. Looks like the oil thermostat housing was deffo jammed with crap. I bought it used and like a **** forgot to strip it and check. I just washed it in diesel. ****.













Might get away with a rod and a polish or grind on the crank. Crank actually isn't too bad.

Ouch. Shame to see this after your hard work Des. Sure the stat housing is the cause not a result?

The scoring on its bore and piston don't look recent and it's badly scored like it's been used for a long time with a bad engine. As soon as I had rod knock I shut down within less than a mile.

Really annoying but at least you know now... she was sounding fantastic in those video flybys - what is the sound limit at Kirkistown these days out of interest ?
