    Can Oilman do 5 litres of Pro S for <£40? It's a shame you can buy it in 25 litre tubs.
    Yes! Prices with discount are very good!

      Like you, I've only ever seen the marketing stuff not the real numbers.

      You need the HTHS and Noack figures to make a judgement and as far as I'm aware they do not appear on any of their information.

      Judging by the data on their website (which may need updating) about the CFS 5w-40 it doesn't even meet ACEA A3 which is the performance spec and it is also API SJ, the Silkolene PRO S is SL and ACEA A3 which is what I would want to see on a so called performance oil.

      In Europe we pay more attention to ACEA specs these days as they are less broad brush than API and they define the quality/use of the oil more clearly.

      FYI, here are the current ACEA and API specs explained.

      ACEA ratings are prefixed with “A” for petrol, “B” for light or passenger car diesel

      The current specifications are:

      A1 Fuel economy petrol
      A2 Standard performance level
      A3 High performance and/or extended drain
      A4 Reserved for future use in certain direct injection engines
      A5 Combines A1 fuel economy with A3 performance

      B1 Fuel economy diesel
      B2 Standard performance level
      B3 High performance and/or extended drain
      B4 For direct injection car diesel engines
      B5 Combines B1 fuel economy with B3/B4 performance

      API = American Petroleum Institute
      S = Service - Petrol Engine Performance
      C = Commercial - Diesel Engine Performance

      PETROL

      SG - Introduced 1989 has much more active dispersant to combat black sludge.

      SH - Introduced 1993 has same engine tests as SG, but includes phosphorus limit 0.12%, together with control of foam, volatility and shear stability.

      SJ - Introduced 1996 has the same engine tests as SG/SH, but phosphorus limit 0.10% together with variation on volatility limits

      SL - Introduced 2001, all new engine tests reflective of modern engine designs meeting current emissions standards

      SM Introduced November 2004, improved oxidation resistance, deposit protection and wear protection, also better low temperature performance over the life of the oil compared to previous categories.

      DIESEL

      CD - Introduced 1955, international standard for turbo diesel engine oils for many years, uses single cylinder test engine only

      CE - Introduced 1984, improved control of oil consumption, oil thickening, piston deposits an wear, uses additional multi cylinder test engines

      CF4 - Introduced 1990, further improvements in control of oil consumption and piston deposits, uses low emmission test engine

      CF - Introduced 1994, modernised version of CD, reverts to single cylinder low emission test engine. Intended for certain indirect injection engines

      CF2 - Introduced 1994, defines effective control of cylinder deposits and ring face scuffing, intended for 2 stroke diesel engines

      CG4 - Introduced 1994, development of CF4 giving improved control of piston deposits, wear, oxidation stability and soot entrainment. Uses low sulphur diesel fuel in engine tests

      CH4 - Introduced 1998, development of CG4, giving further improvements in control of soot related wear and piston deposits, uses more comprehensive engine test program to include low and high sulphur fuelsSG - Introduced 1989 has much more active dispersant to combat black sludge.

      CI4 Introduced 2002, developed to meet 2004 emission standards, may be used where EGR ( exhaust gas recirculation ) systems are fitted and with fuel containing up to 0.5 % sulphur. May be used where API CD, CE, CF4, CG4 and CH4 oils are specified.

      Until I see a proper technical data sheet to compare, I have to honestly say I don't know but I would rather use an oil that I do know the numbers/quality of.

      Cheers

        Fair enough. I've got a 5l bottle of 10/60 which I'll use for the next oil change, but always interested in alternatives - I should change the oil more regularly anyway as that's one of the most important factors...

            Well i changed to 10W50 on sunday and have run it for a few days.

            Must admit car is smooth and cold starts better, fuel comp has gone up in comparison to 10w60. Since the price is the same as 10w60 i'll be continuing the trial of 10w50 ribenna oil (red oil, go figure!)

              The Silkolene Pro S 10w-50 is red to identify it from the 5w-40 which is golden.

                        I reckon for a built engine 5w 40 ideally or 10/60 if you must

                        For a higher mileage S2 then 10w 40 is the way to go....Since I serviced mine with it its been running sweet as a nut (160k miles...engine runs like brand new )

                          How high is the horse power? how is the car used road/track as engine/oil temps are important here.

                          If the car is for fast road use and oil temps dont often rise to around 120deg then I would look at a ester/pao based 5w-40. If the car is used on track and is running very very high horse power then I would look at a 10w-50.

                          Silkoloene or Motul would be my choice.

                          Cheers

                            oilman: track races/drag races , sometimes street driving(around 2000km/year). HP now is 400 , soon 550HP and RPM limit till 8500 RPM.

                            Must start on low C in the winter , like -20C.

                            Currently run 10w60 Castrol RS.

                              Ok I would look at a good quality 10w-50 full synthetic for shear stability under hard use. The Castrol RS 10w-60 is mineral based and not as "tough" as it looks and will shear down under hard use, and is also just slightly too thick for a high revving engine, leading to excess temps (friction) lower bhp (oil drag) and ultimately more wear over a long period.

                              I would look at Silkolene or Motul.

                              Cheers
