So are the FR5DP's also suitable for the stock coils, or do you need the 1.8T coils?.
All I can say is, when I tested a set of FR5DP with my stock coils(1.7bar boost max) I got big cut outs at high boost. When I putted back the F5DP0R everything worked like sharm again. But later one coil did go bad, so it can be that it was symphtons of the coil going bad soon..?

I did not have problems with stock coils.
Maybe your coils were just going bad?
@OP
I know the NGK's that JP posted about work perfectly fine as well.
You always have choice... a friend of mine used to use FR5DP's for a short time on his 3B without ill effects (but he went multi coil shortly after).
suddenly it feels less clear cut than before...is the FR5 suitable for non coil S2's or not..not wanted to trial and error on a new engine build - if they are not proven then don't appear mcuh safer than existing F5's

Uhm, not safer? The porcelain does not break and fall into your engine because they are not "suited", it's because their manufacturing has gone **** up.
Just try it, if you don't have any misfire, then they're suited, pretty easy
If not, keep them for a multi coil setup. They worked on my friend's 3B for a month and on another friend's car with original AAN coils, can't comment on anything else.
The problem happened fairly recently. Like they started getting worse 1 year ago or so.
It's like buying a lottery ticket nowadays. If you are lucky, all will be fine, if you are unlucky, you'll get engine damage because of broken porcelain.
