^^^ agree totally. You need to do a boost leak test to confirm there's nothing amiss...otherwise you're pissing against the wind. One other thing that springs to mind though is the MAF connector. Have you tried giving it a good clean out and maybe LIGHTLY sanding the contacts? Also when you push the connector back on, pull back the rubber boot and using a small screwdriver or the like push each contact fully into the connector.

I had a similar issue with this and cutting out at junctions, had the throttle body soda blasted and this seems to have fixed that fault but now tick over is to high

I've cleaned the connectors (electric component cleaner and sandpaper), also checked and all the pins go where they should.
Once I start it it's fine, but when I start it and don't touch anything it fails to pick up revs, most of the time it picks up perfectly, no jumping about.'93 Audi 100 Avant - R.I.P

I still think it's timing especially as you haven't found the Zero mark yet.
I would take out number 1 spark plug and use a spanner on the crank and a drinking straw down the plug hole to find TDC, you should then see the zero in the window and can check the cambelt pulley and the cam chainwheels are correctly aligned.

So. Dropped a chopstick in Cyl.1. to find TDC and there was a mark (a line, a notch) blue line in how ling it is approx. I was turning the engine bit by bit to look for different marks but there was nothing, also checked the keyway on cam sprocket and that is undamaged and sits there nicely.

Then I set the timing; the silver bit on flywheel is the notch/line

Bring the cam sprocket mark to the V in the cam cover and then check the location of the notch on the serpentine belt sprocket and the dimple on the belt cover. I think they will line up fine. Then check the flywheel window (there are cases of no timing mark on the AAN DMFW.

You can't line up all 3 at the same time. If I move cam sprocket so it lines up with V Flywheel notch isn't visable.
Crank pulley doesn't like up with the flywheel. So I only used flywheel and cam sprocket.'93 Audi 100 Avant - R.I.P

I didn't touch it. Just made sure there are no other marks and checked again. Just don't understand why/how it runs better with timing put from flywheel.'93 Audi 100 Avant - R.I.P

Yes, the RS2 is different and it's supposed to time up half a tooth out.
S2 and AAN should time up perfectly on the marks.Comment

I guess you mean "runs better with timing OUT from flywheel"? It seems the flywheel mark is a bit random..
The important thing is that it's at TDC. One way you can find this wth the chopstick is to turn the engine till the chopstick drops say 20mm, mark the chopstick and the bottom pulley. Now turn the engine over past TDC till the chopstick drops the same amount. and mark the pulley again. TDC is half way between the 2 marks on the pulley. Then line the Camshaft pulley up with it's V. (and double check the camshaft chainwheel marks too)
Then as long as the keyways are ok and nothing moves then it's timed correctly and we need to look elsewhere for the fault.Comment

So, I get TDC, insert chopstick, turn engine till it drops 20mm mark the chopstick and lower pulley, then turn again till it drops the same amount, then mark it again, and TDC is half way between to marks, and then I move cam sprocket so it aligns with V and that should be timing set?'93 Audi 100 Avant - R.I.P

Yes,
From TDC (as near as you can find it with the chopstick)
Turn left for 20mm drop, mark pulley
Turn back the other way past TDC till you get the same drop, mark the pulley.
Find the centre between the 2 marks on the pulley.
More acurate than just using the chopstick..
