Another thought on the recirc flap issue: when the recirc button is pressed on the display the recirc symbol appears in the display, would it be possible for somebody with electronics skills to use the feed that symbol to close a relay via a transistor ? just a thought.

Here is the most significant thing I have found in comparison of MY96 and later CCU loom from the Audi A4...

On the early one, the X-contact feeds directly into both pins C14 and D9 on a black/blue wire.

On the later loom we have a hybrid J126/V2 module (blower & control) in a 6-pin block that sits between the X-contact and pin C14. So if using the B3/B4 evap housing and its blower and such there is a little integration problem as V2 and J126 are different.

I would need hands-on to test out what is going on with the neu J126 - or maybe you need to swap the MY98 B5 blower module into the B3/B4 evap housing to make it all perfect. I cannot visualise how they are different... maybe a simple wiring trick will suffice but impossible to say sitting here.

Updating the spreadsheets again with B3/B4 info as well - interesting to capture exactly how it was wired on LHD B3/B4 machines to compare with B5 systems as they will be best donors for most folk.

No surprise there I suppose, but can you do me a favour and tease the lid of that internal housing - good bet the microcontroller lives in there - be nice to know if software is on an EPROM of some sort.

Then again - If there is a recirc button on the MY98 head unit and there is no N63 on the MY98 A4 then it must effect the function purely with V71 so there is no drama here. That said - it should be possible to drive N63 when the button is pushed - would be nice to know what pin D6 does in that event.

Ill tease the lid off a little later, I don't have that 5 wire fan speed control. I have what appares to be the earlier 3 wire version and this all works as it should. I will be puting this unit into the S2 as per johne's guide.

I just remembered something - that V71 / G113 is specific to LHD on the older climate vehicles... Even the Audi 80 documentation states that - this is related to CCU coding - the fact they never sold climate into RHD on the Audi 80 is another matter.

The diagrams I have show V71 on LHD Audi 80 in the EVAP housing so you shouldn't be able to fit it to RHD evap housing unless it is located elsewhere.

Here's another 'find' - the J153 relay on manually controlled a/c fitted to V6 B3/B4 models has rudimentary OBD capability - I have yet to check if it is pin swappable with J153 on 5cyl engine, but I suspect it will throw a wobbly about lack of G111 input - nothing to do with full blown climate upgrade here but maybe a sneaky way to add some OBD capability onto S2/RS2 with manual aircon. Watch this space - in about 3yrs when I get round to investigating properly - LOL

Yes, my '98 v6 cabriolet had the J153 relay module connected to the diagnostics K-line, I could never get VAGCOM to talk to the HVAC module though, well until now that is but it's too late as I've junked the J153 for the climate system.

For those contemplating the CC swap that have manual aircon already, the blower relay also becomes redundant in the fusebox as the E87 performs the switching duties. I reused the blower relay in it's original position to become the "new" compressor clutch relay.

I did manage to get HVAC talking to VAGCOM on my 80V6 so it works alright...

I am 99% certain you cannot fit V71 into the RHD EVAP housing on the Audi 80 - the manual talks about that flap being only used in certain territories.

I think it will require some CCU hacking to either code it strangely to disable V71/G113 and activate N63 for the recirc function.

Does G71 move only in response to the recirc button - as in binary open/shut affair - or does it move analogue style through a range of positions under CCE control. If it is the former then a quick hack is at least possible... use the V71 pins from CCU to control a simple circuit that activates N63 and also provides correct value with resistors faked as G113 inputs.

@rjscotty - try coding your head unit on VAGCOM as 4-cyl RHD to see if that has any effect on whether V71 is used for recirc function - and maybe if lucky it will enable that D6 output for N63 instead... worth a rattle.

Made to some time to crunch further info into spreadsheets here... added B3/B4 data and some notes about VAGCOM coding - The US Bentley for the Audi A4 doesn't cover that subject so I haven't looked into it properly yet - tis probably well covered on other Audi sites.

Good spot there - Relay 6 (J11) used in manual aircon would be perfect donor for J44 to match up with B3/B4 climate schema as it deletes J153 along the way. I would use auxiliary position 4 however seeing as J201 and N201 are common to both systems and wiring is already in place... No big deal either way though.

My vag com (rs232) lead will not talk to this CCU, tried everything, no good.

This CCU will function perfectly well with V71 disconnected, remember I have had this system running on my office floor !

I,m going to see if I can is to Use the V71 recric motor from the 99 A4 and install it in to the s2 evap housing, won't know till I have it all in my hands.

As far as I can tell the recirc flap is fully open or fully closed. It is operated by the recirc button and will Close (as in recirc on) with the fan speed set to 0, I suppose this is to completely stop the draft. Thanks johne for spotting this.

Your head unit will indeed function with V71 and G113 unplugged but you will get errors...

If the flap is only moved between two positions then it should only require a simple circuit to make V71 output drive your N63 and then fake the head unit into thinking that the flap is opened or closed accordingly. You should take a resistance reading at G113 on both positions - that will help.

I'd be really surprised if you can graft V71/G113 into the RHD housing on your S2 - be great if you could do it though - one less barnacle in the world of climate conversions.

I've started !

Removed some key components from the s2, glove box, scuttle trim pollen filter.

Had a good look at the evap housing and compared it to the A4 unit on the floor in my office. They are remarkable similar and the recirc flap has the same orientation.

I still think it my be possible to install the V71 onto the s2 evap housing.

Dose any body have a picture of the end of an s2 evap housing ?

Look forward to seeing how this one pans out then... good luck with dash removal to get at the EVAP housing and see if V71/G113 can in fact be grafted on - its not too painful a job as long as you take your time - the only really tricky bit is that daft screw on right side of the central duct.
