      • @paul now these have been on a while (and providing you got your monoblocks on) whats the verdict?

        Comment

        • Still aint got the monos on... Much to my annoyance. Just not enough time unfort...

The rears are working a treat though - no rubs, wobbles or worries at all and the handbrake works great too.

I wish I had some indicative stopping distance info for comparison purposes. Say from 60 to zero in X seconds with stock brakes, upgraded fronts and/or rears. I will do that before I do the monos... If some other folk would like to take stop times from 60 on stock brakes then we can get a useful number.

Anybody doing this should do it in consistent manner so as to avoid reaction times clouding the matter. My suggestion is get the car to about 70 on a flat road, then lift off the gas resting your foot just off the brake pedal until speed drops to 60 - then start the clock and mash the middle pedal until standstill.

Actually it might be more technically accurate to do it with ABS off, but not everyone can do that and its safer on the road with ABS on - just in case you have one wheel which locks terribly and throws off the brake test. Just keep ABS on I think.

          • PS - Anyone wishing to do this should do it both directions across the 'flat road' several times to get an average reading. Oh and be careful doing this... You might surpise some fellow travellers otherwise with brake test antics.

            • Just to summarise my 12 pages of reading, am i right in thinking this is an S4 300x22mm disc, A8 2pot calliper rear brake upgrade?

              • Nope - read it all again

Its based on the S4 disc you mention (made smaller for Coupe) but the calipers can be from 280mm sized A8 rear or 269mm sized UrS4/S6 rear. In both cases these calipers are single piston. The A8/S8 ones are lighter alloy but need a tweak to fit the handbrake... and the A8/S8 brake union doesn't work with S2 brake line... needs a custom hydraulic line.

                • Doh

Cheers for clearing that up! In that case Paul, as im thinking of the RS6 front upgrade, is there anything more along the lines of a 2 or 4 piston rear calliper upgrade? I think corey is working on a monoblock one?

                  Cheers!

                  • A monoblock rear - OMG - that sounds hairy - smells like it might need very large fronts for any sort of balance, even though hydraulic pressure to the rear is lower than fronts. Could be great if the balance is good and it works with off the shelf discs.

                    Interesting.

                    • Is there not a front disc from the new A3 that is suitable based on the fact that it is 5x112? Might save having to reduce down the 300mm S4 discs to 280.

                      • Think they was going to use rs6 fronts to monobloc style rears. Would have liked to get rear brakes with porsche on them to match the front's but will probably go for this set up. Just bit worried about finding a place to do the discs as don't know anywhere around here that does machine work like that.

                        • So what callipers can be used on the rear that will fit the 300mm discs?

                          • OK.. ive learnt a fair bit about brakes between my last post and now (and have done the 996 conversion you need to do paul )

Just looking through the FA, i notice the S8 rear disc (#4E0 615 601 J) is 280x22mm vented. Is this not the same size thats required for the coupe? I think the bolt pattern is correct at 5/112.

An easier way to get the right sized disc for the coupe?

                            • The S8 disc has a different hat height which means that the S8 calliper carrier won't fit. I paid a local machine shop £10 to skin the 300mm S4 discs to 280mm.

                              • £10? Bargain!

                                S4 discs it is then

The s6 callipers are showing as 211.50 each and the carriers 116.04 each. Does this sound about right?
