Gutted for you, was looking forward to an update here!

I know how it goes... I've parked the RS2 because I can't be done with dropping the sump on my driveway at the moment! Think I'd take a bit of time out, gather bits, then hit it when you get the motivation.

****! Never seen that before on an I5 - whats the history on that block?
At least you've got to the bottom of that and the crank is good. Did you find out what the oil consumption issue was?

Maybe these blocks can't take the abuse

Found out what the problem was with number 4 main bearing

One small bit of good news is that the crank has been checked and is OK. Just need to start work on another block. FML

I was going to put my 3B engine back together and throw that in, but it needs about £400 worth of parts and then I'd have mess around getting the down pipe to fit.

I do have a spare AAT bottom end, but I'm just finding it hard to get motivated to do it all again!

Have you had the main alignment checked? You might be able to get the block align honed. ARPs do crush the mains slightly, so if your mains are out of alignment it won't take much to eat all your clearance.

Well that's a bit of a blow, looks like the engine could be scrap

After the crank re-grind I fitted the new bearings and torqued up the main caps. The No. 4 bearing had somehow become crimped and was damaged. After fitting another set, I could only get to 40lb/ft on the mains before the crank become stiff and at 65lb/ft it locked up. Afte taking some measurements off the block is seems the block is bowed in the middle, meaning the main caps are ovaled, no. 4 being the worst. JP still has the cranks to see if that is salvagable, if not I'll be starting again.

    P**sed off is an understatement

Well it'd be no fun if you just drove it all the time, you have to pull it apart once in a while!!

Everybody ask me if it's the turbo leaking that's causing the high oil usage, but as it's only done around 10k miles since a full re-build I was hoping not.

Here's what I found today, the turbine is sooty, but dry

The comp side is virtually dry, there is a slight film of oil on some of the inlet hoses, but nothing extreme and the intercooler has about 1 teaspoon of oil it it.

There is also no sign of oil pooling on the back of the valves as I've seen before, changing the VSOS seems to have cured that.
