Yeah i saw your PH post.

Definitely try the points you mentioned... and i feel your pain on the battery.

I'd say either something like the headunit draining power if its after market, or a dead battery if you've run it down and had to jump it a few times. The temperature has been getting colder remember.

Yeah the DV (finally) turned up today (5 working day delivery my ****!) so will see about getting it in to Rich for some more experimentation.

Really not sure on the battery, it's not an especially old one - I replaced it maybe 3 years ago and it's a decent brand so not sure what's going on. I'd had it off the car for a full charge after it had gone flat whilst being stood and it fired up beautifully, used it 5 days later for a good long run without issue then came back to it after another two days and it was too low to start

Headunit and alarm are original - probably the only aftermarket electronics on it is the tracker which it's had since well before I bought it and the lights. TBH I think the lights are the culprit as despite having the damn things rewired about 3 times they STILL go wonky occasionally - my theory is a dodgy connection that's shorting?

Actually the more I think about it the more I'm pointing at the lights - when I used it the first time after the charge it was daylight so no lights needed. The time before it flattened itself it was at night and with scooby lights you don't have to turn them off at the stalk as the turn off with the ignition so I almost certainly left them "on" and maybe that was enough to make the difference?

        (apologies for the thread derailment!)

Took the car for an MOT on Wednesday which passed without an issue.

I had the car at an open pit lane at Bedford today hoping to really test the coilovers after some adjustments, but what an absolute disaster

Conditions were very slippery with sun and showers, but we got out on track early and had a few good laps building up the pace until some poor chap in front of us shat his engine out the back including all the oil. The session was red-flagged whilst they cleared up and put down 1km of concrete dust and we came in unable to cool the car down much.

An hour later we were back out but there was instantly an issue at high boost on WOT so we came back into the pits. The car was still building boost but it was very hesitant and you could feel something constantly juddering and holding back.

I expected to find a boost leak but nothing. I tightened up all the clips anyway, turned the ignition on/off, topped up the oil and went back out, with no change.

This time we came in and checked evey single hose and vacuum line for cracks, splits and leaks with no sign. I checked the filter and it was torn but I don't think that would make a difference under sunction, however it did seem to be covered in a film of oil but none visible in the inlet hose.

We noticed what looked like the pipe had slipped up off the inter cooler a little bit but readjusted and tightened this with no luck.

After lunch I took the car out again and up to 1bar it felt perfect, but under WOT still the same issue. It seemed to dissipate after a few laps but then suddenly the issue cane back again at WOT and high boost, this time however it edit different and more of a very high frequency juddering on the boost.

Unable to work it out I had to abandon the day and head home, concerned I was going to permanently damage something. This is the peak zeitronix values from the trip home with 1 spell of WOT where the same problems continued to occur... Low peak boost, running a bit rich.. You'd think a boost leak right?!

I was hoping to look at the ECU diagnostics however I don't have my cable handy.

                Any ideas?!

Sounds sparky. Pull the plugs and check colour and torque. Coil packs on the plugs or separate?

I had hesitation issues on boost after some contamination on the intake - just needed a few miles to clear and it was never an issue once I sorted the smouldering crap that was causing fumes to get drawn in.

Had hoped that perhaps a dump load of oil in front could have been an issue, especially when it cleared, but the fact it has more of an issue now doesn't sound good. If you can hear and feel it I'd be concerned it was knocking, until ruled out avoid driving it hard.

Are the AFRs normal on cruise/low boost when you're not getting the issue? It so it does sound like a poor burn causing unburnt fuel, which I'd say is poor mixture (contamination or crap fuel), poor spark (plugs/coilpacks), low compression (you've been there and know the pain) or too much fuel (fuelling or air leak).

I'm not sure what to suggest, but I'd want to check the intake it clean, boost leak test, check plugs, coil packs, compression test, fingers crossed it's something simple. To be honest I wouldn't want to keep flooring it to test so it would be good to find out if there's any symptoms that show up without going WOT at high revs.

                          Spark issues = always lean.
Pressure test the intake, most likely a boost leak.

On the plugs after the conversion. If it was a plug or coil pack then there was no misfire at all.

I don't think it was the oil, i think that was just a coincidence especially after running it for a little while when the problem seemed to go then come back.

AFR's normal yes, even WOT was typically 11.5 at top-end and only occasionally it would drop to 10.5 as pictured so it's intermittent (my favourite kind of problem ).

The fuel was the same between the first good sessions and the subsequent poor laps when trying to fix. I put another 30l in and still the same problem so i think i ruled that one out.

Also completely agree on not flooring it all the time... that's why i binned in the day and returned home. The issue is in trying to diagnose and fix it i have to floor it.

Would a knackered MAF cause this kind of issue?

                            Cheers.

I had this drilled into my head when i was trying to fix it

I need to dig out my pressure testing kit then give it a go. It does feel similar to after ADI when some of the vacuum lines were cracked, but less severe. Those were replaced and it worked instantly.

I just hope no crap has made it past the filter and into the engine, causing a repeat of last time Luckily the filter is torn on one side, but not disintegrated.

You should be able to see/hear the issue better when youtube has processed the HQ version of the video... and yes there was a tool in an MX5 who almost T-boned me diving down the apex of a corner in the braking zone - strictly prohibited

And the answer is... Spark plugs.

Number 2 was melted which manifested on boost as per the video. I ran it up to VRS in Northampton with no issues and will be collecting tomorrow along with a new filter. I think I'll have to add some plugs to my spares collection!
