Clutching at straws here, have you had a look at the 2 multipin connectors on the firewall near the coil connectors?
The ground wires on the manifold? Give them a good tug they can look connected but be rotten.
    MAF Connector (sorry )
    Lambda wiring?
Vac tube to ECU, is it the original clip? It might be tightened completely but still leaking.
There's a fuse in the fuse box for the 12v for vagcom, maybe blown. With the ebay 2x2 leads its easy to fit the connector backwards..

    Feeling for you bud

When I did the first test drive of mine after fitting the RS2 kit, I gave it some beans and then the revs wouldn't drop below 4000... thought I'd broken something but it turned out to be an injector wire stopping the TB from closing properly Worth checking for silly things like that, although it's obviously different with the reverse inlet.

Cheers guys, newsh, i'll check those things out, thanks.

I had the TB off to remove the TPS (don't ask!) and all went back on fine, i will check hose connections when i get back to the car. I can't think of any cables or anything that would foul the throttle cam with the reverse inlet/

I thought it could be the throttle cam catching on the bonnet again, but after popping it there was still no change.

Andy, bring the car to Will's and let him have a go at it.
I'll be around the London area next week, if he can sort it by then, you'll get a mapped and running car back next Sunday.

Just wondering if its an actual TB problem. I have only seen heard of one instance on here where the TB was diagnosed as having an air leak but as the cars are getting older perhaps it might start becoming a problem!
I have never seen one dismantled so not sure what actually seals the spindle against leakage. With a front mounted inlet its sort of out of sight out of mind.
So maybe a leak out the spindle or its hanging when released somehow. A substitution might help if you have a spare. Guess you can pull the hose off to see whether its stuck open or closes fully shut. Would think it would be be quite wide to idle at 4k rpm.

I had the TB off to replace the TPS, all looked ok and it opened/closed absolutely fine.

I've sent will a message on the forum, if anybody has this number please pass it along

RPM's getting stuck is either throttle cable, sticky ISV or mahoosive air leak on one of the vacuum lines.
There's no other thing that can cause it.

Worn shaft on the thottle plate so it catches every so often.

Hope you get to the bottom of the fault soon

Yeah agreed, anything that causes the throttle to get stuck.
