Update time, done a fair bit this week:

Ordered gaskets to put valve covers and intake back on, ordered some engine mounts from 034 as I haven't had time to make my own as I cant weld and got fed up of waiting for my old man to help me out....

All the old wiring for the 7A loom has been cut out now, removed carbon canister, hydo brake servo and cut various brackets that were no longer needed, ABS, radiator, bomb etc.

Yesterday I pulled the gearbox out to make it easier to mate it to the V8 block without messing my new clutch up, Was a pain getting it out, ended up bolting it to the 7A block and dragging it out. Snapped my 6mm allen bit removing the prop and had to deal with a couple of stripped heads on the driveshaft bolts, all very entertaining, and probably par for the course.....

I think when it goes back together ill drop the subframe off completely as i can just lift everything up then.

Installed my 034 flexplate adaptor, and southbend clutch kit, and mated the gearbox and engine together.

I was well chuffed until I tried to turn the engine over, its stuck solid so need to pull it apart again, and ideas...?

Also, when I removed the old engine harness I accidently cut the wires for the two plugs on the passenger side of the gearbox, i think one is a reverse light switch and the other is the speedo output.
Can anyone tell me where the wiring ends up at the opposite end and the wire colours so I can trace it back and splice it back in, I still have all the wiring and plugs so it just needs reuniting with the correct wires. I lent my bentley to a friend and im waiting to get it back so I can look myself.

Hopefully I should get my mounts pretty quick so I can get the engine in and leave it there so I can work out the rest of the plumbing, and routing the new wiring.

Also need to throw the battery in the boot, im not bothered about having it under the seat, may make up an aluminium box at work to cover it up and just strap it in the spare wheel well in the boot. Whats the best method for moving the +ve cable?

Ta, ive attached a few pics for your enjoyment.

Definately easier to remove / install engine and gearbox together IME, drop it straight down and pull it out, its how it was designed to go together in the factory

Do you need a bellhousing spacer to clear the flexplate / adapter? Looks fatter than an SM flywheel

ran into same issue with my swap...not sure 034 even knows.... I would rather use a v8q 5speed steel flywheel...but i do not have an 016 box

              01a
              3.6 v8
              3.6 auto flexplate spacer
              4.2/3.7 flexplate/starter ring
              034 flywheel insert
              Spec unsprung kevlar disk
              7a pressure plate

and still needed a washer spacer around bell housing bolts

Do you know how thick the spacer needs to be? Will the aby one be ok, I think that's 6mm right?

I've emailed 034 and awaiting a reply. Doubt ill get one, never do. Be better to give them a ring.

They really need to put stuff like this on the website, "compatible with all 01a and 01e transmisions" did any 01as ever have a spacer?

i did not know there was a factory spacer on the ABY I5's....any pictars?

i trimmed 2-4mm off everything in the trans housing, that auto flexplate spacer is 2-3mm? a wash is 2mm? 6mm sounds about right.

i know the 034 insert was made for the abz motors... i had to come up with my setup since using the older pt v8.... it just gets more interesting.

                          Quick update,

I got a reply from 034 regarding the flex plate and 01a issue, they said that some gearboxes have slight casting differences and that some small griding will sort the clearance.

I decided I couldnt be arsed with messing about and as I have a 6sp 01E waiting I bought some S2 driveshafts and an avant prop to frankenshort my cq one.

Also, my engine mounts and gasket set finall turned up from 034 last night, so I can bolt the engine in properly, route the wiring loom for good, install the intake, injectors, and valve covers.

however, its my 25th today, so

booked a long weekend off in a couple of weeks, hoping to get the car rolling again as Im moving back down to the dirty south.

                          Peace.

Another update, been layed off work a week early between jobs because my ex-boss is a **** and a tight ****, doesnt want to pay my due holidays. So got a week or so of free time on the car.

I redid my wiring harnesses, I wasnt happy with the quality of the crimps i had used, so bought some proper milspec environmental ones we used on aircraft wiring repairs, and the proper crimp tool for them, much happier now.

Im toying with the idea of keeping as much of the original fuses relays and 12v wiring as possible for the injectors and coils, and various other bits that need power.

Ive have a suitable redundant 12v feed for the injectors, but as far as i can tell, the ignition 12v feed is unfused, is that right?

Also, as I want to fuse the coils feed, what size fuse rating should i be looking at?

I've made up a jig from the 5 speed box and mounts so that I can put the 6 speed on it and fab up some mounts to meet the original mounting holes in the subframe in the correct locations.

Yesterday, ordered remote oil filter head, oil cooler, thermostatic sandwich plate and adaptors needed to run my oil cooler setup, with -10 hose.

Hopefully will have lots of pictures soon.

                            Kieron.

                              Some more news from today.

Parcel from speedflow turned up with my cooler, and remove filter bits. Hopeing to mount this on the firewall some where.

Made a boss for the crank VR sensor to sit in:

Used some metal epoxy, drill and tapped to fit, and voila. can be filed down or washers added to achieve correct air gap.

Also, made some big progress making gearbox mounts.

You can see my rudementary "jig" i used for getting the locations correct.
Tacked in place for now, and will be welded up proper and painted tomorrow.

Got to finalise some power feeds for ignition coils, and also run new battery positive cable to the boot, just using jump leads for now.

Ran out of heatshrink so cant finish cleaning wiring up, but wires are wires:

Thats all for today, will be more tomorrow.

Good to see more progress on this. The metal epoxy is a simple solution, I take it that its ok with heat/oil etc?

                                I like the "jig"
