UPDATE: Dad just called me and he has managed to drill the hole and remove the broken piece.

Car has been sitting for couple of weeks and will for another couple of weeks. I've bought the 90 degree drill attachment, but even then I will have to remove the downpipe to fix the thread

Hi Janis, have you got any further with your problem?

I'd be careful doing it on the car as I'm not sure where the water ways etc are in the head. If you can best bet would be to have head off and have it fixed so an accurate drilling and rethread can be done

Available in the UK from here:-

We use them at work , I'll try and remember to have a look on Monday and see if I have a 'spare' M8 insert
Haven't seen these before I guess this would be best for future as I could use M8 studs

If you could check that would be great mate

Just to check, manifold studs are M8x35? Asking because the ones I've removed are M8x50?

I will also visit my local engineering company and see if they can make me M12 to M8 stud as Described suggested, as making thread in the head is best way.

I'm thinking a right-angle drill with one of those left-handed drill bits. You'll still need to get a new insert fitted though..
Thanks John, didn't think of that 90 degree attachment One will be on order soon and I really hope it works.

I did this amazing drawing here The black bit is original hole in full length, and red bit is the second half (first half came out) of the thread insert that's stuck in there

I can't get access with the drill (even if I take downpipe off). I tried using bolt extractor without any luck

After some ****ing about I can't get the other half out. So it seems like head will have to come off for **** sakes.
