Downpipes, turbo and manifold removed. Manifold going to get skimmed tomorrow. With a straight edge I can see a warp at cylinder 5. Over 1mm.

Jees that's some warp factor. The starship quattro must be bending the laws of physics there (cringe).

I had assumed the new manifold was flat and had been skimmed after welding but clearly not.

Exhaust manifold and turbo refitted and up and running again. Engine sounds much quieter so the manifold blow out must of been quite bad.

After that I went for a test drive. I have a few more issues. First is the gear linkage. It is slipping in the gearbox shaft. The shaft is d snapped and the part that bolts to it is also d shaped. The linkage d is larger and so can move on the gearbox shaft even when the bolt is tight. So I need to remove the linkage and weld it up and make the d a tight fit with the gearbox shaft so it can't shift and make the gearbox feel random.

Next issue is a brake one. I have an issue with the bias box that needs adjustment as basicly I have over adjusted one of the master cylinders and this means when the brakes warm up they can let fluid back to the reservoir and so the brakes bind on. Should be a easy fix but it's in a difficult position to be in to adjust the peddle box.

I fitted a pressure regulator to the rear brakes so it's easy to adjust them. Also fitted the alloy door cards to the door.

But now I have more vems problems. It's driving me NUTS. As I have said before I had no wideband sensor working and I found that I had only have 12v to the sensor and not the ecu. After I connected the 12v to the lambda probe AND the ecu lambda probe pin wideband is working but I have other issues now.*

What is happening is that the ecu is randomly crashing when I try and start the car. When it crashes vems tune cannot connect to the ecu and I have to jumper pins 2 and 3 on the the rs232 connector to force the ecu to go to boot loader mode. I then can upload firmware and config and restart the car ok.*

The ecu crashes when I turn on the ignition. It sometimes runs the fuel pump constantly and other times not at all. Vems tune cannot connect and the car won't start. When the ecu is correct the fuel pumps should only run for about 2 seconds and stop and start again while cranking.*

The ecu seems to get confused somehow. Why would this be? It happens at random and I can't force vems to do it. I could start the car 10 times no problem and then the next time the ecu won't do what it should somehow. This issue only started after I connected the 12v to the ecu wideband connection. Could this be related. I seem to have good ground and 12 v supplies but is there anything else I should check? This is a Motronic style vems ecu.

Also I have no internet connection in my garage so I'm uploading firmware 1.9x boot loader. Is there a way of downloading firmware 1.2.3x into my laptop do I can load the latest firmware when not online?

          Thanks des

What linkage did you use Des? Shouldn't be any slack there as the selector shaft is tapered. I guess the lever arm is off an 01E car?

Have you tried your other VEMS ECU? Seems like this one may be faulty?

The linkage I used came with the rs4 box but would appear now to be from a different box. Maybe a 01e. Anyhow I will weld it up and grind it to shape. At the moment Its only the friction of the bolt that's holding it from moving on the shaft and that appears to be insufficient.

My other vems box has never had this issue. But now I have fitted a cam inverter circuit inline with the sensor only this ecu will run the car without cutting the circuit out of line. That and the wideband lambda connections are different as the Urs4 ecu is a proper vems econoseal plug setup with a short adaper loom to Bosch connector and the problem ecu is a Motronic style vems with bosch plug direct on the Ecu. Also the problem ecu has a second rs 232 connection for my dash gauge setup.

It's all a total pain in the but. The only thing I can think of is that there are 2 switched 12v supplys to vems. One on the wideband and the other on another Motronic pin. These come from different sources so may switch at fractionally different times. I might connect them to the same relay and see what happens. This problem only started since the wideband got connected up properly....

Des - Assuming your garage has mains power from your house then you can extend internet over that with a couple of power line adapters. I have an older pair that you are welcome to try if you like. Performance depends on distance for one thing.

I have cat 5 ran and it used to feed a Wi-Fi access point. But it packed up and the cat 5 won't reach the laptop. Another job....

Grill finished. Not perfect by any means but it's done.

Sorted out the gear linkage moving by welding up a part to get a grip on the gearbox selector shaft.

Also adjusted the bias box. Total nightmare. Anyhow now only the front brakes are sticking on when they heat up. Just need to slacken off the prelaod on its master cylinder. A real joy....

Anyhow in the wet on 1 bar boost its plenty fast enough. Would take a bit of getting used too.

Changed the switched 12v feeds to the ecu to come from one relay via 2 fuses. Will see what happens....

Lots to do an Saturday as I'm going to a track day with the car on Sunday. Just going to run a safe map at wastgate boost to shake the car and me in. Wish me luck.

Brake master cylinder adjusted and a quick wash.

Took it a fair blast and when I got back the top end tappets were very noisy. Had plenty of oil pressure and the oil wasn't excessively warm. Normal? Any how its on the trailer.
