How goes it RobI don't want to piss anyone off but..... my center bearing was knackered. Took it to my local propshaft place. http://www.propshaft.co.uk
They said if they fit aBMW bearing then the rubber won't be matched to the diff mounts, gear box mounts. Apparently they all have to move together. IE Bm bearing will create different thrust front to rear...
Made me wait 4 weeks untill they'd tracked down the makers for Audi. I think it came from sweden?
They did get the exact part.. Impressed they didn't fob me off with "ye mate a BM one will do"
I know a lot of folks have a BM one fitted, I would be worried for the long term. It might take 20-30 miles before anything starts whining..
Rob
Will these chaps know what I'm on about if I email and ask for a 1995 S2 centre bearing? I mean I don't have to explain what the car is?
I'd much prefer to replace with an OEM centre bearing if possible rather than using one from another maker. Makes a bit more sense if it's available.
And did you get the CV's from them too?
Thanks in advance mate

Jas, i spoke to Pete at QuattroCorner and he had the oem centre bearing for....£200 apparently, i double and redouble checked that he understood what I was asking for and apparently thats the price....ouch?!?!?!?!? The BMW bearing mount is not a robust looking as the OEM version but to be honest its easy to change out and with my car at 180,000miles i doubt it will need to be changed again now...
As for CV joints, the Scorpio joints are almost identical, only the boot differs but you can just reuse the original if its in good condition, mine looked fine. I bought a pair from a place on the web (supplier is detailed somewhere) for £32 delivered....so worked out about £55 for the centre and two cv's

That Vag parts bearing looks like a BMW one, not the correct part.
Just because they sell them dosen't make it the right part.
Jas, I am sure they will know what you want, when they did mine I just gave em the shaft and they gave me it back all done.
Nice to have the right parts spinning away just next to your ****, A failed centre bearing and a flapping shaft at 100+ mph, fine if you like shafts and bottoms, but not for me!

Thanks buddy, I'll give them a call this week, I can't drop the shaft off though, it's still attached to the car. I need the car daily for the next few weeks as my 90 is on loan to my mum. . Ideally it'd be great if they could ship the parts to me and I'll get my local specialists to fit them. They enjoy me bringing the S2 in, keeps them on thier toesThat Vag parts bearing looks like a BMW one, not the correct part.

Thanks David, I'll keep this info in mind if I can't source the OEM stuff from Rob's contact. Ideally I'd really like to try the OEM route first though.Jas, i spoke to Pete at QuattroCorner and he had the oem centre bearing for....£200 apparently, i double and redouble checked that he understood what I was asking for and apparently thats the price....ouch?!?!?!?!? Have you got the web address of the place you used? I assume they are scorpio rear inner joints with it being RWD?
All info much apprieciated

Why is the bearing going to fail? I think this has been a fairly well practised replacement and to date i haven't heard of any issues regarding noise, wear or failure? Just becuase it isn't oem doesn't mean it cannot be used either...the actual bearing is the same as far as i can ascertain, the metal is less meaty i'll give you that (as i pictured in a recent thread) but to be honest I don't see any logical reason why it should be ripped clean from the car
Naturally we all have an opinion, if your's is right I'l happily post a shot of the prop and my a*se

look forward to that!, not the failure just the shot!
If you are happy with the Bm one fine, but I have seen the book of centre bearings, there are thousands! if one is ok for many why do they make so many?
Ring Chris at propshaft uk, he will explain the whole rubber/size/mounting ins and outs.
The oem is getable so why use a Bm one? or if Bm parts are your thing, get a BM!Rob..

cos i can't see what the difference is in the bm one and the oem that equates to £200 of difference...simple as that
I can have 10 bm ones fail or wear for the same price which i cant see happening.

Could be false economy, its the thrust thats the issue, the wrong rubber tension and you move the loadings front or back, giving the diff or box the good news. They are all designed to move a certain amount together.
Only trying to help....

Whooa guys, I feel guilty now
I can see the point of the cheaper one, but if an OEM is availbale, I'd like to use that, after all mine has lasted 150k miles now.
Don't think I can bare the thought of a bimmer part on the car either, the rust will set in, I'll stop using the indicators, drive around with my fogs on all day and generally start driving like a knob. (joking
)
Peace

I've got to work out how to do that 3 lans switch to get off the motorway and onto a sliproad too inside the 100yd marker, lean forward over the steering wheel and start driving with my right elbow out the window.
@GT500 - you're probably totally right, who knows and hey its not a dig
just lively debate....
Quick question to anyone running a bmw (i prefer to call it a Febi-Bilstein) part, have any of you looked at the mount recently to see how its wearing, would be interesting realism angle to inject at this point in terms of on the car performance/condition.
Cheers
