Black Ur Project

  • The areas in the boot that were rusty and where I welded got zinc primer then Novol protect epoxy before top coat of black.


    The tank is all ready to go back in with its nice new tractor hose. He he.


    The heat shield are all good but very grubby. A bit of scrubbing required.



    One down three to go.


    The new Milltek exhaust needs two brackets fitting. I was reluctant to drill holes in my boot but a really good template was supplied and I just went for it.


    Unfortunately, the older style Ur Milltek is nla so no option if I wanted one.

    So just heat shields to clean and fit then I can move to the rear diff and build up the rear subframe ready to fit.

      • Can you take some extra pics of the template and the miltek mount set up. I've always felt the standard mounting arrangement wasnt up to the job

        • There were no instructions with the kit so I contacted Milltek and they sent me these pics.




          Obviously the clamps go underneath the car.

          • I'm guessing they sent you the dimensions of that template?
            What bore is the pipework? 2.5"

            • They actually sent a metal template. I can copy for you if you like. Yes, 2.5" system. No middle box . Hopefully will sound good.

              • Nice, hopefully you have some big mudguard washers or a bit of plate inside the boot for the nuts to rest on

                • I put some big stainless washers there. Strange that they only supplied mild steel nuts and bolts. The brackets are aluminium. I had some stainless nuts and bolts knocking about

                  • Petrol tank went back in.


                    Tip if the day. Put some hose over the fuel pipes to stop them scratching your nice new boot paint.


                    Getting the holes in my new seal was a bit of a gamble. Just gave it my best guesstimate and I think I got it ok.


                    Then fitted the pipes. Stainless fittings of course.


                    This cheap pipe cutter from Aldi is handy for cutting hoses. It's very sharp.


                    Just one last fuel pipe to fit which is coming from a kind member in America. I'm actually going there in a few weeks. Sunglasses and grin.

                    Next. Heat shields. One didn't pass quality control. I got some material last time I was at the breakers yard.



                    I had to trim the rear shield slightly because of the Milltek exhaust hanger.


                    I've used clips taken from newer Audi cars at the breakers yard. The newer style are bigger and do a better job, especially if the holes have worn larger.

                    • And this afternoon made a start on the very grubby diff.



                      Apparently it was black once.

                      Now, no easy way to get the rear bush out. You have to be quite brutal.






                      Thankfully fitting the new one will be a doddle.


                      Also made a start on the actuator. Two at the back on this early Ur.



                      One actuator is broken and the cable was seized. I've been running light oil down the cable every week for the past couple of months and it's moving again.
                      Anyone have a spare actuator before I get a Mercedes one?

                        • Before I ordered a new seal from Tradition at over £100 I wanted to see if it was actually leaking. So filled up with EP90 and left on its side overnight.


                          Bone dry.
                          Checked the other side for the afternoon and that's dry as well.
                          This seized stud was removed.


                          It took ages to clean ready for paint but we got there in the end.
                          A quick coat of etch primer then some satin black.


                          Things are starting to progress.

                            • I see you went for a brand new fuel acumulator, I hope it wasn't too insanly expensive!

                              Your welcome to any exhaust heat sheilds from my B3 quattro as I'll be removing the lot to save weight plus they act as dirt traps.

                              • Things don't always go to plan.
                                I wanted to use oe style subframe bushes again. I prefer them as they work well and make it easier to re align the subframe using the old witness marks left by the old bushes.
                                So, I couldn't fine Lemforder bushes this time so went with Febi. I've installed oe bushes few times before and never had a problem.


                                Today was different. I used plenty of silicone spray and the same tools as I have before. They just didn't want to play. It wasn't very cold in the garage, the powder coat doesn't appear any thicker then normal. Can't think why they didn't just pop in like normal. Maybe the Febi bushes aren't as well made as the Lemforder?


                                So after damaging three bushes in a row, I threw the towel in and fitted the poly bush kit I happened to have. The
                                Poly bushes took 5 minutes.
