  • Eurika! Looking good there Alex but aren't those Inlet valves a little bit slim for longevity?

          Careful here
Did you empty out the thermostat portion?
Oil goes from the engine into the thermostat portion , it is cooled and then returns to the thermostat portion where it is then filtered and goes into the engine.
Blanking those 2 I am not sure how that would perform.

If you want I could send you a 7A housing which does not have the oil cooler portion (perfect for the Mocal sandwhich plate) or use what I used which is off the 2.5 TDI A6
it mounts the oil filter horizontally as opposed to vertically so creates some decent room for that oil return line.

          • Hey Issam,

Once you remove the stat internals then you basically bypass the cooler take-off section as there is a direct flow path to the filter
I'd not seen the TDi part though, will take a look as it is a pretty busy area down there with the AC compressor etc, more space always helps

            • Any updates?

              • Yeah I guess its probably time for an update. To be honest I've not had time to do too much but been working on the car this weekend so should have a good bit done by tomorrow.

                I fitted a 60-2 rear crank seal:

New OEM tappets & cam chain

                IMG_0542.JPG

I welded a -12AN oil drain on the rear of the head. This will link to the fitting I added to the sump with a -12 hardline, yet to be fabricated. Should take care of the oil surge in the head and improve drain-back to the sump, as well as crank case breathing.

Sent my turbine housing an manifold off to be ceramic coated, full triple coat internal & external - I'm really impressed with the finish.
Before hand I flashed over the mating flange on the Wagner manifold and it needed over 1mm milling off to give a flat mating face .
Ported out the .82 housing a little, just to tidy it up where it was machined for the KKK manifold flange.

                IMG_0793.JPG

Tapped the hotside flange for the EGT sensor:

                IMG_0795.JPG

Tapped the compressor housing for a boost reference:

                IMG_0796.JPG

Seemed a good time for a gratuitous shot of a shiny billet comp wheel:

                IMG_0264.JPG

Next some work on the running gear.
I fitted a new 27mm RS4 / RS6 master cylinder and B8 fluid reservoir. These use M12x1 fittings so I took the opportunity to revise some of the brake lines.

                IMG_0989.JPG

The tandem servo actuation rod is shorter than the mono version, so I machined a longer CrMo clevis. Its a safety critical component so needs high end materials - I use ‎34CrNiMo6 / 4340 / EN24T

                IMG_0992.JPG

And of course any time you can improve on OEM you should

A crappy shot up under the dash showing my shiny new clevis at home

                IMG_0997.JPG

Under the car, I fitted new custom stainless flexi-lines to the calipers. These plastic coils are a Porsche 996 part, tidying up the flexi & ABS line nicely.

                IMG_0990.JPG

B5 RS4 rear hubs and refreshed uprights. The rear wishbones and subframe are looking a little tatty now, its been about 8 years now since they were looked at. I guess a 10 year cycle on refurbishment is acceptable
This reminds me I still need to make a pair of brackets to retain the ABS cables.

                IMG_0911.JPG

URS6 calipers, B5 RS4 rear carriers & grooved B5 RS4 rear discs. Wolfgang deserves the credit for the R&D on this bolt-on rear brake upgrade for the coupe - yes that's right - 100% bolt-on
I skimmed & grooved the discs a while ago - surface rust shows how long they've been sitting about

                IMG_0912.JPG

Up next, bigger front anchors. 996 GT3 4 pots originally supplied by Movit. I grooved & bored some 330 x 32 Brembo Mercedes discs & made some light-weight alloy carriers.
