  • Hey Andy I just scanned through this entire thread quickly, I will read it a bit more in depth tomorrow at work lol. Shame you also lost the motor first time around as well, I know how that feels, it must be something to do with the name Andy! It's all worth it in the end though fella, when these garretts spool there insane.

Your motor looks the dogs danglies mate, good work. I can feel a race coming on sometime this year, get it mapped and practice your launches then bring it on

I suppose you could skim a couple thou off the pump housing and the block face to true it all up? I'm sure the water pump gasket would benefit too.
Might do that when I build my engine up
      Lol thanks!

No oil issues at all in normal or motorway driving never got temp above 100c

      I'm running 10W50 oil

Congrats been away so long forgot the problems with this build.

I'll be interested to see what your car drives like I have long considered going to the smaller 3071r turbo with the stroker setup.

      • i doubt that it would be much better than your choice Jamo. I tend to think now that even for the 2.2 the .82AR is very good, so for a stroker it would be ideal, even better than the .63AR.

You're using the ABY cooler, which is bigger than the 3B. I now have a 13row cooler that I'm going to try fitting this weekend.

Also might have found the issue with oil pressure, see Billmans 'Oil pressure issues' thread. It seems the Tdi oil squirters are much bigger than the 3B/ABY ones. I'll try swapping to my 3B squirters and also switch to 10W50 Fuchs oil and see what happens.

Have you though of trying the new GTX turbos?

          • Ah yes forgot about that, I was worried about the size of the oil cooler but decided to try the ABY. It works fine, when it fails I'll uprate it to a mocal etc

I'll have a look, I replaced all my squirters with news ones as I lost the ones originally in the block during the build then found them 3 weeks later, typical. I cant remember if I bought TDI or ABY ones though.

The GTX turbos look sexy but to be honest it would be cheaper to have my 3076r remade to a 3071r it's only the compressor cover and the compressor wheel that is different, the centre is the same between the two. I can't do it yet though got to get at least one dyno run out of the 3076r

              • It's not that bad think it cost ÂŁ60 for all 5 but that was 3 3 1/2 years ago

                • heard that GTX turbos although make higher power than the GT equivalents, they do not spool faster.

the only solution for faster spool and at least equal power are the HTA options. ie a HTA 3076 .82AR will outspool the GT3076 and produce the same power.

                      • If I'm going to all the hassle of removing the sump I really want to fit new ones. If all else fails I can use the ones from my old 3B lump.

                        Thanks for the offer anyway

The accepted norm seems to be between 2 and 5bar when hot. I'm only getting 1 to 4bar when hot. See Billmans thread 'Oil pressure issues' for more details, I've got pretty much the same as he has.
