yea, see, it really depends on the engine.

Timing numbers are made on the dyno, not on the forum.
You put it on the rollers and boost until you stop making power.
At some point the car will start to make more power with less boost. If you are running 9-10 deg timing you might consider boosting less.
I also don't really see where that 15 deg comes from for a stroker - I've been able to run more, but of course, not at silly boost levels.
Everything is connected - saying "run xx timing" or "run xx boost" has no meaning.
P.S.
Why not bring TFSI engines into the equation, to make the discussion even less relevant? :/
Yes, let's compare 10.5 CR DI engines with our 20 year old stuff.Last edited by prj; 2 May 2011, 19:47.Comment

When you say the turbo was dumping oil into the breather system. Sorry reading on phone so may have misread something.
Do you mean your boost pipes are filling up with oil? If so are you running a stock air filter with stock maf location? If so trays your problem. The turbo is trying to swallow more air than the air filter lets it have. The end result is negative pressure on the compressor turbo seals. Your engine literally sucks the oil out of the turbo centre cartridge dripping into thurs intake pipe, filling the boost pipes etc...
I did try and phone you today to talk through it to diagnose. Phone me b4 shipping the turbo so I can confirm a couple of things as I had the same prob on mine.
Alternatively if your crankcase is pressuring from boost increase check your one way check valve in the breather system under the intake is not permanently open.UrS6 Stroker + HTA3586 =

I would get a vacuum gauge on the turbo inlet to measure how restrictive your air filter setup is.SSComment

I'm sure the air filter is not the issue. When JP had this issue he was using a std airbox and it was pumping oil into the inlet to the extent that it was filling the intercooler. Mine has the airbox removed and a huge K&N cone filter fitted. There was a little oil in the intercooler, an eggcup full? but it's been fitted for a couple of years now, so who knows how long it been there.
I'll call the turbo shop tomorrow and see what they've found.sigpic

Well it's finally all back together and driving even better than ever. The seals on the turbo where shot so the bearing cartridge was replaced along with a clean and balance.

While the turbo was off I took the oppourtunity to do more work on heat insulation as the filter is right next to the turbo. I've re-fitted the hotside blanket I got from Owen Developments, removed because I spilt oil on it
Big mistake, I think I had to boil wash it, with dishwasher tablets, 8 times to get oil the oil out of it and stop it smoking when it got hot.
Also made up a heat shield from sheet aluminium to separate the hot side from the air intake, and added some ducting to supply cool air into the air filter.

The result are very noticable, the intake pipework and filter now stay cool to touch whereas before they were getting hot.
When I first put it back together I noticed I was getting a fine mist of oil coming from the oil filler cap, not sure if all the boost leaking into the sump had damaged any of the PCV componants so I replaced the pressure regulating valve and the one way valve. This seems to have cured it as there is now no oil mist
Mapping re-booked for 2 weeks time.sigpic
