what are the chances?
Is the bore ok?

Not sure, there is quite a lot of debris there and it's making some nasty noises when I try to turn it over so I'm leaving it until I can get the sump off and clean it out a bit.

Is the broken valve cause or effect do you think?

maybe it was fractured before you put it in

Dropped valve definately the cause I woulds say, either it got stuck or the valve seat / stem had gone or just cracked and it dropped off under pressure

Sh*t!!!! rebuild rebuild, need to check to see if the bores are O.K, touch wood, new piston and ring , new head though

Other pistons appear untouched, not sure about the bore though, with the amount of shrapnel flying around in there I'm not holding my breath.

My 5 pot tdi died a similar death. Same cylinder as well!
Similiar damage with the stem being driven throught the piston. It also bent the rod and the tdi rod is pretty stout.
Only thing I could see in the post mortem was a cracked crankshaft pulley key. All the other cylinders/valve train were perfect. I think you have a steel replacement though!

Did you mark where the timing was belt wise before taking it off? just to be able to check it was still timed up when you can turn it.
Most dropped valves i've seen look like a valve failure but usualy have reason to have let go. ANy tapping sounds before it went?

The whole set of tappets were changed for the ones from my 3B engine. This was to try and cure a tappety noise it had from day 1. The tappets made no difference and now looking at the pistons I'm beginning to wonder if the re-bore was done right and what I was hearing was piston slap.

It's debris, the other pistons appear unmarked.

The engine is now back out of the car and on the stand, I'll start stripping it tonight.

A local engine specialist. I'm taking it to somebody with a bit more I5 experiance this time.
