Andy, heads were skimmed by Barnes engineering at eastwood in rotherham. Decent honest guy. I had them already stripped down, cant really comment on rest of his pricing or services but he did what I wanted fir a fair price.
Quick update, but nothing really exciting has happened.
Mostly prep and accumulating parts and materials.
Cleaned up the heads and lapped all the valves in a while back and went to start assembling them but the valve stem seals didnt seem to be going on right and a couple ended up getting munched so I stopped and need to investigate whats up. Theyre the right ones for the car / engine but seem really difficult to press onto the valve guides. Need to get some more to replace the ******ed ones and figure out how to get them to fit better. Might just be a case of finding a better fitting socket or bit or pipe that wont damage them. Last head I did they just popped on and seated fine with a socket and a light bit of malletising.
Got a load of exhaust bits cluttering up my garage now, along with the block on the stand so I dont have to drive up to the unit to work on it.
Couple of 2" vbands for manifolds to turbo pipework, 3.5" vband for downpipe from turbo, 2" flexis etc etc.
Sump is off block as I needed to drill and tap a place for the oil return from the turbo above the sump line, there was a perfect boss on the passenger side of the block for this so its going there.
Need to finish this, as my drill hasnt got enough power to last long enough, think its a 24mm drill or something. 3/4 NPT to -10AN.
Also, I was in the states for a few weeks, managed to find the rocking horse **** like official crank locking tool for cheap so I can crack that off now and get the bits for doing the belt. I sourced a timing belt kit while I was over there for mega cheap but it didnt get delivered in time which i was pretty gutted about.
Locks into a notch in the timing belt cover to hold it in place while it gets torqued up.
Not much of an update, but I'm still fettling away.
Haven't been in the garage for an age, partly because it's a tip and partly because I've been busy.
Made some storage to keep my exhausty bits out thr way and stop me tripping up everytime i do venture into the garage. Couple of curtain tie backs from b&m, 2 quid. Bargain.
Finally finished off the turbo drain fitting in to the block, and cleaned the inside of the block out so it can get buttoned up again with new gaskets. Took some right effort tapping it, 3/4 npt.
Also been dealing with a sheared water pump bolt. Would not come out with the stuff I had with me, ie no fire. So ended up drilling and chiseling the remains away, need to get a tap to see if it'll clean up or it'll be helicoiled.
And I mentioned a while back that I couldn't ember the valve stem seals on without destroying them, tried again today with another socket but same story. So I've ordered the proper set of kit for it with drivers and pilots. Was pretty cheap anyway.
That's holding me up really, once they're on I can get the heads together, throw them on the block and get it all built up, and starting fabbing the exhaust plumbing.
Got the seal installation kit I ordered as I wasn't having any luck pressing the seals in with a socket. Works a treat, should have bought one ages ago, so much easier and a bargain really, 17 quid including pliers for removal. Had to do a little adjusting and fettling to get them to work proper but nothing silly.
Anyway, got all the seals in one head and started building it up.
It's been a few years since I rebuilt a head, I must have been a lot more patient back then. Nearly threw my toys out of the pram trying to get some of the collets in haha. Managed to keep my cool just.
Will get this head finished up tomorrow and possibly put it on the block if I'm happy with it being clean inside. Also need to get to gsf to pick up some more stem seals to replace the ones I destroyed.
Youve been making good progress. I can sympathise how much of a PITA it is when a bolt shears. I had one of the exhaust manifold bolts shear on a rebuild a few years back
some grease and a small flat bladed screwdriver are the items of choice in that situation good progress. and keep it up. i want to go the same route 1 day

That's what I've been using, but then I decided it would be a good idea to magnetize my screwdriver. That was a mistake haha.
I'm away on holiday atm, will get back to it next week.
Ooops, I thought I'd posted something up, I only found out from reading last months that they were publishing it this month. It was well over 18 months ago now haha.
