Oil recommendations and questions here - The Definitive S2 Oil thread
I have been looking into some viscosity kinetics and shear temps of some oils and i noticed that although they should be within specific SAE, they do vary to the point that for example a 5W40 is thicker than a 10W40, even in cold condition on 2 fully synthetic oils.
Should we be looking at specs of oils instead of just SAE numbers?
yes i need to know that too, as that is where my oil temp sits 95% of the time. I have never tracked the car to know if it goes higher, but with the OEM oil cooler i had seen it go close to 130 when i was doing some spirited driving on a hot day in greece up a mountain...
1994 S4, 260,000km, original K24 turbo. Currently running Total (Elf) Quartz 9000 5w-50.
A get a bit of a puff of smoke on startup usually only after the turbo has had to do some work (normal full boost pulls going into a 100km/h zone, once or three times, not "thrashing it").
From what I have read, I believe the turbo oil seal is the cause of the smoke puff.
The turbo manages 1.8 bar boost which is normal full boost for the Autos I believe. Otherwise it doesn't smoke bad for an older car with higher mileage. I top up about 1 litre every 2500-3000 km or so (3 months or so) but I do a lot of short trips while the car is cold (3-5km trips).
I can do a 500km+ trip, then another 500km+ back, plus some round town driving in between, and it might use a 1/2 litre on that trip.
Most of the synthetics available around here are 0w-40, but I can get 5w-50, and maybe some others..
Any recommendations?

Well the oil you are using is fine, consumption is quite a bit but not excessive and I wouldnt worry too much about a puff of smoke so might as well carry on as you are. Can you get any 10w-50's?

I've ordered from your site many times and since my car is due for a service next month I'll be doing so again.
I own a 140k 2.0 8v ABK coupe. Engine is fine with no signs of burning oil between services. I drive spirited when I can, but my general use is to-from work, circa 20 miles per day, about 6k per year. I live in Aberdeen which means that 4 months of the year will be spent starting the car at negative temperatures in the morning.
Currently I use the recommended 10w40 but am wondering if you would recommend anything else, or a decent brand (I'd be looking at £30-40 for 5l).
woops, apparently they don't make a 5w-50 Quartz 9000, but from memory now I think I used a 5w-40 last time as they did not have the 10w-50 in stock. I'll stick with the 10w-50 next time. Thanks.

Hi
I would use a 5w-40 synthetic to give better cold start protection.

Out of those, the best ones are the Fuchs/Silkolene Pro S, Millers CFS, Motul 300V, Redline and Gulf Competition. The Motul 8100 X-Cess, Millers XFS, Fuchs Supersyn, Shell Helix and Mobil Super 3000 are good, cheaper alternatives.

Thanks Tim, I've used Fuchs many times in the past so will probably stay with them. What's the difference between the Titan Supersyn and the Titan GTI? I've noticed the GTI has had a price-drop of late.
Essentially they just meet slightly different specs. It could be argued the GT1 is a better oil.

What would you recommend putting into the RS4's gearbox (2001, 2.7 Bit)?
75W90? What brand?
Also, what oil would be your best pick for the engine in this thing?
5W40 Motul 300V?
We get temps down to -20C in winter, if that is any help, so the car has to start sometimes in those conditions. Perhaps even go 0W40?
Thank you for any advice.
In the engine, I'd probably be going for something like the 300V 5w-40 or perhaps the Redline 0w-40 if you can get hold of that. That will give the best cold start protection.

If you want to go for the best, the Millers CRX 75w-90 NT, Gulf Competition, Motul Gear 300, Redline MT90 and Millers TRX are ideal for the gearbox. The Castrol Universal, Motul Motylgear and Fuchs Gear Syn are all decent alternatives.

As a budget choice, a 10w-40 will be fine and I would either go for the Fuchs XTR, Shell Helix, Millers XSS or Motul 6100

Thanks, no i want to put the best oil i can put in, just out of interest, what is your recomended oil change interval?
Personally no matter what car i have ever owned i have changed every 5000 miles.
This one as it is doing a very low millage, i have changed every 3 months... overkill i'm sure but from march this year to next, the car will be lucky to have covered 3000 miles.
