  • Feel your pain Dave, similar story with mine. It took me long enough to find someone I trusted, then even longer to convince myself to spend that much money again but then only to be let down again. Like you I'm determined to use it this year so postponing paintwork until later in the year then the whole cycle will start again

    • I have a new toy

I needed to get the tracking done before I can take the car for it’s mot (which is 12 miles away).

After the mot, I can get a full 4 wheel alignment done.

      • I just did mine yesterday, got the use of a "Hunter" machine from a friendly main dealer...…..what a bit of kit!

        I've got a track-ace as well...cheap but accurate, if a little fiddly ?!

Yes, had a little play with it earlier. A bit fiddly as you say. I think it would be better if they designed it to attach to the wheel, rather than lean against it! Should get the wheels pointing in the right direction though.

Then it would cost more........the bar against the wheel is simple to keep cost down me thinks.

                • I’m not too keen on the trackace. Very fiddly to set up, kept coming off the wheel and when I finally got it working my tracking was so far out it wasn’t even on the gauge!
So, after seeing a gunston tracking gauge on eBay, I decided to make my own.

                  • You get the idea.

Why is my steering arm ball joint so close to the tyre? It’s not actually touching but pretty dam close!

                    • You need to adjust the strut to upright angle - loosen the strut to upright bolts and pull the top out to generate more clearance to the ball joint.
You still can’t beat the string line method for 4 wheel DIY accuracy - and best of all its free
You need to remember to roll the car back and forth to allow the contact patch to settle after each adjustment otherwise it will be wrong as soon as you move the car.

Cheers Alex. I knew there had to be a simple explanation. I think I'm going to have to do the back as well. The handbrake cable spring is touching the inner rim of the wheel. This may be due to my S4 brake upgrade though.

                        • So, I don't seem to have enough adjustment there to make any difference. We are talking about the two big bolts that hold the strut to the hub? Hub moved a couple of mm but that track rod end is still on the wheel. Are the correct ones a slim profile? Wouldn't be surprised if auto doc sent the wrong ones. Unfortunately I chucked the old ones so have nothing to check against.

                          • What width & ET are your wheels?
Strut/upright bolts are M14x1.5 so nothing special size-wise.
