  • The exhaust was very grubby and needed a good clean.

I gave the mild steel a coat of high temp Fertan.

Put the bumpers on, wheels on, torque all the bolts required with car on the ground, fit exhaust and fire her up. Need to clean up the wires under the dash and remove aftermarket alarm remnants.
All the interior needs doing as well. Door cards and headliner. I'm aiming for mot 1/4/22.

          • I'm hoping to start the interior tomorrow. I've got the rear arb to fit and tighten the drive shaft bolts, and any bolts that require the car to be on the ground. Looking forward to working on slightly less dirty components and not having to lay on the ground with my nose touching the chassis of the car...

Would you be able to send me some images of the full exhaust when fitted. I'm going to get my system replaced and want to see how the OEM system is on the car.

            • Just wait till you remove the door card adhesive
Yes, sure. I will get some pics.

              • Was not going to remove the door card at this point in time, was just going to clean it on the car unless there is a good reason to remove it?

It's the glue that secures material that's a PITA to deal with. If your door cards are ok, no real reason to remove them. If the material hasn't been 're done, it's on borrowed time The foam behind just desintergrates.

                  • Had the same issue with my headliner on the B5. Looks like my door cards are leather so should be OK for the time being but I'm sure the foam behind them is destroyed.

                    • Unfortunately the leather ones fall off just like the cloth. Just had to do my Avant ones which were leather (vinyl actually).

                      • I got the wheels back on and the car on the ground. Torqued up the wishbones, top strut nuts, hub nuts and the front arb bush bolts.
Doing the wishbones isn’t easy due to restricted access. I couldn’t get my torque wrench on the front bolts so used to rear ones to calibrate my wrist!
                        Then onto exhaust.
The internal sleeves on the springs were rusted out. I figured these were just to hold the spring off the bolt. I didn’t have any steel sleeves so made some in copper.

New bolts of course but not stainless as they aren’t up to the job.
Then plenty of copper grease on the olives and sleeves.

And my trusty window cleaner pole assistant.

                        It all got fitted.

The back box is touching the heat shield so I need to make some adjustments.

The home made spring bushes seem to be working.

The car has got rather dusty whilst it’s been on the lift.

Plenty more to do before I get it on the road.

                            • Fair play Dave, you've made great progress with this car, looks smashing, hope to see it in the flesh in a month or so if you fancy popping up for a cuppa.

That door card covering foam breaks down into what can only be described as a uniquely irritating substance, I have the fronts on my RS2 to do so may as well put all four on the list, their just about hanging on at the moment. However with Alcantara trim one has to extra careful as the orange stuff instantly bonds with the fibres on contact and isn't easy to get off, yay, that's going to be a fun job.
