  • Front brakes fitted.
I would like to say it was a simple job but it didn’t quite go to plan and took me most of the day.
First I fitted the carrier brackets the wrong way around. After a bit of head scratching and a text to error it was sorted. Then, powder coat was so thick it required some cleaning to get the carrier to sit right. Next problem was that the brake pipe holders needed adjustment to make them work with the HEL line.

Basically converted the closed hole to open like below as the HEL fittings are too big to pass through the holes.

I still need to sort where the HEL line meets the original hard pipe as the HEL fittings don’t sit in the brackets the same way so you can't use the spring.

    • Steering rod ball joints needed some weight under them to do up.

I tightened up the adjusters in the same position as before but will be going for alignment when everything is done.

Made a start on the front.
Thermostat replaced with a new one.

      Found this hose split.

Luckily, I happened to have some new the same size knocking about.

Re fitted the hoses to the new after run pump. New header tank.

I also replaced the short length of pipe from the PAS reservoir to the cooler pipe (that had been leaking for a long time.
Made a start prepping the radiator cowl for fitting to the new old stock behr radiator that I bought from Bertman (thanks mate).

      • Nice to see a Wahler thermostat in there - im amazed how much better my car is for having one, anything else would be letting down the rest of the car youve put so much work into

        • It’s definitely worth looking under the hose clips for splits, I’ve had a few leaks “hidden” by the clips. The right angle rubber ISV hose is a favourite. As is the TB hose.

            • PCV pipes are usually rotten because of the hot oil vapours going through them. That why I usually don’t Boost leak test with the PCV connected at the MAF hose. PCV system only ever sees vacuum so it doesn’t need to hold boost.. Apart from the one way valve!

First time I ever did a boost leak test in my 3B was at Greg’s garage meet. There was a flatulent pop and the main T shaped hose just fell apart, it was just made of gloop.

              • Got the radiator in and all the plumbing done.
I’ve replaced all the fittings for stainless.
I have used the 7a hose as I’m deleting the aux.

                • Not much progress to report. The little things seem to take the longest time.
New air filter and boost pipes fitted back.

Made a little bracket to support the wires as this holder normally sits on the oil cooler bracket.

And made a start on the plumbing for my replacement oil cooler.

                  • Well that was an hour pleasantly wasted catching up with your progress, all very, very tidy I have to say, how you find time to take the pic's and do the work is really impressive. I was planning on getting up early and going for a walk as I've a nasty cold I've just shaken off, however it's pissing down ATM so coffee and fire it is for now.

My left elbow still has to kept warm or it hurt's, or hurt's more I should say, still it's much better than it was. Have even been considering going back to work a couple of days a week, more for the social side than anything, though it would do me good to get my hands moving now they have at least healed up.

                      • Got the oil cooler fitted. It seemed more difficult than when I did the Avant but this is slightly bigger and the pipes are stainless braided which makes them a little less compliant.

I need to trim the top bracket a little and paint it black. I filled the cooler with oil.
I also used some high temp tessa tape around one pipe that was touching the cambelt cover to stop it from making a mark.

Anyone have a spare one of these? Holds the top radiator cover.

                        • I filled up with some cheaper oil which I’m going to use as a flush. The car hasn’t been used for two years and not sure when the oil was last changed. It was pretty clean but I think it will benefit from a flush. I will change it after a short run up to temperature.

                          Filled up the hydraulic oil.

Bled the brakes. This tool is brilliant.

Just need to put the wheels and exhaust on then torque things up before I start her up. I also intend to use some cleaner in the water before the new anti freeze goes in.
