A little something to keep me busy

Now I have a small dilemma. The basket was removed no problem but the basket holder appears to be bonded to the bottom of the tank and is way too big to fit through the hole. If I use tank sealer in here, will I still get the basket back in?

The basket holder is bolted to the bottom of the tank on 3 captive studs. I had mine out recently, but my tank was rotten and I had to chop the bottom out to replace it, the nut are tricky to get to even with it on the bench, wouldn't like to try it in the tank!

Hmm, that's a conundrum... I'd have thought there's enough flex in the basket and holder to allow it be refitted but I wouldn't want to bet on it and once you've done it there's no going back.

Where's the tank leaking from, the seam?

I've been mulling this over whilst walking the dog tonight. It is the seam and internally it looks very clean. I reckon if I keep the sealer away from the basket and just run it around the seams I should be ok

I did remove the three nuts but found it was bonded as well. No way it's fitting through the hole anyway.

The tank needed a scrub to get all the caked up oil off. The holes got sealed up first to stop any dirt getting inside.




Then I was ready to do battle.


It didn't take long to find where it had been leaking.


And I also swapped to a nylon brush. I didn't want to blow myself up with petrol fumes still in the tank.

After a couple of hours it came up quite well. No other holes found. It then got a coat of Bilt rust treatment.


On to rear bumper removal. Another shock!


What the trick to getting the bumper to release after the bolts have been removed? I can slide it back and forward but the two side brackets won't release?

Tank repair options.
Get a patch welded in,
Use solder in the holes,
Use special petrol proof epoxy repair putty,
Braise rod,
Lead load.
The inside will be sealed after any repair with a special tank sealer and the outside will be epoxy painted.

That whole area look's quite thin and pitted, I think I'd weld a new patch in.

I can't help with the rear bumper, am at the same point with my saloon, it moves back and forth two inches but won't come off.

Have you removed the combi bolts from the wheel arch liners?

Bumper sorted. You have to push hard down on the bumper next to the bracket and at the same time pull the bottom out. It wasn't working and I guessed the plastic had gone a bit hard with time. I warmed it up with the heat gun on lowest setting and it popped right out

I wonder if this car was used to launch a small boat n the sea? All the back end is rusty.

That's some nasty corrosion and as you say a serious accident waiting to happen. I was also wondering if this car has been in regular contact with salt water, it's really exceptionally rusty for an Audi.
