Quick update. It was a false alarm. I re tested and found the union on the tester was leaking. I fixed it with some ptfe tape and now all cylinders are testing good. Phew.

Sorry to hear this David. I feel our pain but at least you have an idea of the problem and the knowledge to fix it!

Cheers Kit. Good advice. I'm not 100% sure whats going on. I'm going to remove the rocker cover and test again and try see what's happening. Cylinders 1-3 have good compression. Only one piston was replaced and it was like for like.
The purpose of the trip was to give the Rs2 a run and take it back to it's birthplace.

That a bit of a bummer, are you sure the head is leaking as opposed to the rings not being quite bedded in? I'd be tempted to give it another good heat cycle and take the revs up to at least 5K for a few mins before pulling the head.

S2 head's are pretty resilient to cracks around the spark plug holes and they don't normally leak.

Are the leaking cylinders the ones you had to find replacement pistons for?

I think I'd still go to Germany in my Nothelle if I was you, a break would be welcome, you've done well to get as far as you have with the RS2.

    The Bosch pump arrived.

But I won't be fitting it just yet.

I still have poor starting and rough running until it warms up a bit. I've also noticed an unusual amount of steam from the exhaust each cold start. Unfortunately, I know what this usually means. Sad face. Had it before on an Audi 80 1.8.
    So

No easy way to swallow this. Cylinder 4 and 5 are loosing pressure.
I've just checked my bill from the engineering place and no where does it say they tested the head. My fault really for not asking. I just assumed they had.
So just got to bite the bullet and get on with it.

They are closed tomorrow but I recon I will have it there first thing Monday morning.
My trip to Germany in May is looking doubtful. Very sad face.

I've ordered the Bosch pump that fits many vag cars. I will post a pic when fitting. From memory it is not plug and play and as Kit says the mount has to be adjusted as it's slightly shorter.

The heat cycles are going to be a bit more "extreme" compared to a washing machine, I'd happily fit a Transporter one .

The Transporter one is very simalar and is plug and play, however it's an inch so shorter so will only fit properly in the one rubber mount. I used one on my 3B as it was half the price from TPS and I couldn't be bothered to send it back.

Maybe so, these cars are strange sometimes when it comes to sourcing parts
