I'll pull them and have them grooved later when I'm a closer to finishing.
Is 20mm still the best distance to groove?

A couple of years ago I bought a ratty 1995 90q (80q everywhere else in the world) to use for a few parts on the RS2. It was a car from the northeast, read rusty, but I needed the suspension and wheels to mount on my RS2 project in order to roll it around the garage. I also took a some wiring, door handles, door glass, wiper motors....well you get the picture. I've been keeping it in a small garage on the opposite side of my house and needed to move it to the front of the other garage, the one with the tools in it, so I can finish removing what I want. The plan then was to winch it up on the trailer and then take it for a "ride"......you know, the kind of ride a mafia guy gives..
Well I placed this car up on my car dolly I built a few months back. The dolly was never intended to carry a car with a motor (broken timing belt), rusty gearbox, and rusty diff. As I was pulling it around the house with the truck the rear rigid wheels decided to collapse. The drive has a slight slope to it and they just couldn't take the lateral force. I was left with a slight quandary to say the least.
It was close enough to the big garage that I could drag a air hose to it, so there it sat for a couple of weeks......much to my wife's dismay. I took the remainder of the parts I wanted from this POS with my wife begging me to remove it before her little baby viewing/tea party coming at the end of the week. I promised her it would be gone in time. To be honest, I really didn't know how I was going to get it up on trailer, but I didn't tell her that.
So, on Thursday, two days before the party, I tried. Working alone, it took me just over two hours. I used every trick in the book....my floor jack, the engine hoist, several boards as levers, wood blocks, a manual winch, a chain or two, some tie downs, etc.
The collapsed wheels
The rusty junker
I used the engine hoist to support the rear
The trailer has a roll off deck, but the ground isn't level, so jacked up the wheels and pulled with the winch. This was a slow process. Winch a couple of inches....run to the back use a board to lever the engine hoist a few inches forward....go back to the winch.....rinse......repeat.
Eventually she was on the trailer.

On Friday I took her for that ride I promised. NOT for the squeamish!
I must admit that I was laughing hysterically by this point. It did get worse.......
They squished it flatter than a flitter and tossed it, literally, on the top of the heap.
The scrap metal guys paid me 161USD for it.Last edited by saltinot; 24 May 2009, 04:30.

On a lighter note......
I finally got wheels back from the machinist. I bought a few of the Cup II Porsche wheels to use while I build the car. I had the machinist mill the center bore to fit the RS2 hubs as the standard porker 911 wheels don't fit without a little milling.
The machined centers from the front..........
........and back.
Some nice 993tt discs from my parts stash get to see daylight finally. They look so nice when they are new.
From behind the wheel.
Not a common sight here in Georgia.
Center bore looking good! Yipee!

Tom,
Great photos and insight, consoling and invigorating to see others stuck doing the impossible, e.g. with the saloon, the tolley and the trailer.
Hope this post helps mentally for the next time you come under pressure, keep the faith.
( I know that one wasn't a biggy, but you get the idea ).
Kind regards.

Thank you for your continuous support. And believe me, I need all the support I can get!
Persevering through difficult situations can be trying at times. This time I just kept my chin up and embraced the challenge. I don't think I cursed even once during the entire thing.
I huge sigh of relief at the end.....and several beers too

just wondering who's is the black urq in one of the first shots above?
That's my 1985 WX (one of only 76 '85s in America). She's Graphite Black metallic with black interior. She has been in storage and is covered in dust. I pulled her out of the garage because I'm refinishing the floor. Hopefully next week the concrete with be finished and I can give her a bath and back in she goes until the RS2 is finished.
The '85 urq is the next car in the project pipeline. I am simultaneously collecting parts for it too. I planning on a build 500hp+ engine. I'm thinking a car for track days. With all the NLA parts I just don't have it in me to try to do a restoration again like the RS2.

HA! Yep, my trolly let me down.......and I was so proud of it.
I've come to realize that it should be cut down to half its current height and, of course, new stronger casters. I gotta get that done 'cause I need it to take the RS2 to the painter. Which should happen soon.

Amazing projcet - i've just re-read the whole thread again
When are you off for paint then Tom? That will be a proper turning point in the project when you can start putting parts on the chassis, fitting the electrics and interior etc. Can't wait to see progress...Panthero Coupé quattro 20vt
