    Hi Tim,

I've been using the Silkolene Pro-S 10w-50 oil with my car for some years, track day oil temps usually around 130C, although at Spa last summer I saw 150. Oil is always changed following a track day.

I recently changed the oil cooler for a much larger version and whilst I have not yet been back out on track, the road oil temps are already noticeably less than with the original cooler.

My question is, should I now use a different grade of oil now that maximum track day oil temps will most likely be much lower?

    Thanks

      Oilman,

      Audi S2
      ABY 2.2
      CT355 turbo (around 500 - 550 BHP)
      V-Power
Usually quite spirited driving (read as flat out off every roundabout )

      Some questions...

What oil would you recommend right after/during an engine rebuild?
When would you change this and for what?

Normally I'd get the engine running, do a heat cycle to then tighten the head again and change the oil at this point. Then change again after a few hundred miles. Just interested in yours and others thoughts and specs.

      Thanks

        Hi

I'd say the best thing to do is keep an eye on your oil temps for now, if it gets over 140C on track then I'd say it's best to stick with 10w-50, but if it stays under 130C, then a 5w-40 or 10w-40 could be a good option.

        Regards

        Tim

I'd use the Millers running in oil for the first 100 miles or so, changing at 50 miles, then 250, then 5-600 and put the good stuff in at 1000.

          When it's ready, a 10w-50 is ideal

The Nanodrive CFS is, on paper, the best oil available, but the Pro S and CFS are both really good oils, so all are good choices for your car.

            Hi Tim,

Can you recommend the best grade of oil to use on my coupe ?
            2.8 V6
            170k
I rarely see oil temps higher than 100c, spirited driving(when I get the chance) on a standard n/a engine.
My temp pressure only reads just over 1 bar when fully hot and no longer reads 5 bar +/- from cold
It does improve with oil changes but this does not last long leading me to believe I may be using the wrong grade ?

            Any suggestions ?

            Chris

                  Hi Jasper

90C is far too low for a 10w-60, a 5w-40 or 10w-40 is more appropriate.

Out of those, the best ones are the Fuchs/Silkolene Pro S, Millers CFS NT/CFS, Motul 300V, Redline and Gulf Competition.

Hi Tim, I normally put in what ever I can get my hands on that's in the 10-40 grade.
Last time I did an oil change I put castrol magnetic in which I don't think was really suitable !
For what this cost me so far I could have bought an S2

I think that's the issue. Magnatec is nothing special and breaks down fairly quickly, which is why the pressure starts off okay after a change, but drops off soon after.

I'd go for a better oil, like the Millers CFS or Gulf Competition as they are much better oils and will last longer. Alternatively, go for a 10w-50 as that should definately sort the pressure out as it's a bit thicker and all the ones we have are very good quality.

                      Cheers

You could use the Power 1 Racing 10w-40, the normal Power 1 isn't great

With the Rallycar, I'm quite conscious of the oil when hot and whilst undertaking aggressive work. We are still wet sumped, and I wonder if, as with many rallywrecks, that the continued, shortish warm-up followed by several minutes of 'loony-tunes'... Could be better protected with a stronger oil choice.... Currently 10w40 magnatec appears okay, but would a thicker (say 10w60) protect the bearings longer in this harsh heat cycle environment.

Your do not hear hydraulic tappets when hot?I once tried 10w40 and at 130 oil temp tappets were screaming to come out. After 5w40 never heard of them
Tthings should be simple.5w40 for normal conditions, thicker for racing use taking care to let the engine get in temp before reving it(i mean more care compared to 5w40).The quality of oil is my problem..
