        Though saying that doing the job on a C4 isn't nearly as annoying as a six speed B4.

            I see you also employ the sheet of cardboard trick to keep track of the the bolts, as do I, was shown to do that when I first started working in a garage.

            That rear crank seal doesn't look too good, at least it's easy to change and cheap, I always aim to get the lip of the new seal running on a fresh bit of well cleaned crank as opposed to being precisely where it was located before.

            I did say it was almost certainly a problem with the pressure plate but wasn't quite expecting to see that!

            A second pair of hands makes the job quite simple and it's much safer. You'll also find it really helps when refitting the box, one of you can keep an eye on the gap being even between it and the block... The other chap just has to push and wiggle, and I'm sure you know to have an easy to fit bell housing bolt to hand for when it does pop back on.

              I would love to know how that pressure plate could shatter like that that. Can only think of been driven through water when the clutch was hot. Either way that car does does look like it's had a hard life.

                It's a mystery. There is some scoring on flywheel but it's not too bad. There is also a little rotational play but apparently this is acceptable. Any DMFW experts here? My understanding is that they are very reliable. Newer stuff isn't. Replacements appear nla.

                  I was also told the DMF's for the S2 are bullet proof. What was the old clutch plate like? I take it you have not been able to test the master or slave cylinders

                    The old plate still had some wear left. No sign of oil contamination. I have a new slave to fit. Release bearing is a bit rough. Master feels ok.

                      Sump off.


                      Strainer isn’t too bad.


                      And not horrendous inside.


                      Given a scrub


                      I had forgotten I need two gaskets so on hold until another VR one arrives.

                      No sign of the plastic bit.

                            I've seen pressure plate's break just like that a couple of times but on each occasion it was due to the friction disc being down to the rivets, the clutch slipping and the driver continually trying to drive around it as opposed to paying to fix it, both times on turbo diesel vans. Has the car got a tow bar or could the owner offer any insight to what may have caused it as I'm assuming it failed whilst he was using it.

                            That sump look pretty stinking, well worth getting all the nasty old oil residue out.

                            The rouge bit of plastic may have found it's way out when the car last had it's oil changed or it could be still down lodged in one of the cylinder head bolt wells in the head, in either case at least you now know it's not in the pick up.
