Yes! However I'm out in the sticks a bit and there are some good test roads around. I wouldn't drive it without getting it legal though. In the UK you are mot and tax exempt driving to a booked mot test.

You need some shakedown miles for encouragement but also to find any other gremlins so I'm in the go out on the road camp. Taking the bumper off isn't a long job - well at least it isn't on a coupe - and even if you're just bolting on a pair of new, newly painted wings the time taken to remove bumper and headlights is only a small percentage of the total job done properly.

Yesterday I removed the steering wheel again. I checked for continuity in the clock spring and it appears ok. I gently wound the clock spring in each direction until I felt resistance and counted the total revolutions, divided it in two and went to the centre position. I then set the steering straight ahead and replaced the wheel. Went into vagcom and cleared the code.

We are good. No faults and no airbag lights.
However, cold start idle is awful so I've ordered a new temp switch for the back of the head. Hopefully it's that and a simple fix.
Then I thought I would test the bonnet pull (before the lights go back in). Bad move. Shut nicely but one side refused to release despite having full access to the little lever rods. Lots of expletives! After trying all sorts and getting no where I realised that the lock plate carrier was so out of position that the pin was catching on the edge of the slam panel. I was able to loosen the lock plate from underneath using mole grips on the screw bottoms. This allowed it to slide the panel over slightly and it released.

So, now at a bit of a crossroads. Do I refit the front lights and bumper, get her mot'd and then get the front wings rust sorted or shall I sort the rust now whilst it's all in bits. I'm quite keen to take her for a drive. What do you think? Pondering.

    Thanks guys.
Ran her this morning and the pump is silent and no leaks. Hurray! The old pump was leaking from the bottom x plug.

So I gave myself the afternoon off as I heard an Audi 80 had turned up at my local breakers. It looks rough but the interior is very good and it had a nice period Blaupunkt radio that will go in the Ur. Lots of other generic parts found their way back to mine too. All at a very reasonable price.

You were quite right. Wasn't too bad. Just the aux radiator in the way. Removed the slam panel bolts to give a little wiggle room.
Getting this little Allen bolt off was the hardest bit.

The pump I have as a spare came off that 2.6 cabbie I broke. It's quite new and was fitted on the cabbie just before I bought it.

After removing the spout it was identical and a perfect fit.
The old pulley needed some persuasion to leave its old home.

All done. I will test for leaks tomorrow.

Pita to remove. Think the aux rad and main radiator will have to come back out
Nah changed one at a French service station on my rs2 when it went pop. All can be done from above the pump.
nearly there. What's running in?? Sounds like a 1960s term...

Holy cow! Brilliant! And good news it is 'only' a PAS leak, hopefully easily fixed and associated with noisy pump.
