Engine and gearbox are now one, and the engine turns over just fine.
Cant express how relieved I am after all the pi55sing about Ive had to do.
Also re did the crank position sensor, decided not to trust the epoxy stuff I had used, so flattened the casting off and drilled and tapped the gearbox for a bolt and spaced it appropriately, but can be adjusted very easily. Dont have a close up, will get one tomorrow.
Tidied coil wiring up on valve covers.
Also primed the back end of the gearbox as it was looking a bit tatty, will spray it black tomorrow.
More tomorrow, gonna go enjoy some homemade ciderz.
Oh and for anyone whos interested, the aircraft in the background is owned by founder/ ex owner of Matalan!
waiting for various bits and pieces to turn up, mostly bolts for buttoning everything up.
Sprayed the **** end of the box black, looks much tidier now.
Ive removed all the exhaust manifold studs, as a couple of them got bent, I have no idea how, and quite a few came out when I originally removed the manifolds so needed replacing anyway. More shiney shiney is always better in my book. I used hilok pliers to pull the studs out, they have cross serated jaws and grip harder the move torque you put on them, budge anything.
Snapped a pic of my VR sensor mounting, looks pretty lame I know but its plenty sturdy and adjustable for depth to get the airgap right.
Also chopped a bit more off the sump as it was sitting on the subframe still, so hopefully it should clear now.
Had to make a plug for the water hose that originally went to the oil cooler which has been removed. The passage in the block just had a core plug hammered in but I turned up a plug to go in the other end which was a rubber hose. Sorted.
Need to have a look at my shift linkage, the big ball joint is pretty loose, need to work something out there to get rid of the slop, as far as i know its not replaceable right?
Ordered all the bits I need to get the car to fire now.
Starter cable, Adpators, fuel hose, couplings, Few more relays and bases, and last few nuts and bolts needed for gearbox.
Made up fuel lines:
Cut ends off original 7A lines at firewall, which is 8mm outer diameter, which is close enough to 5/16" which is -5AN. So flared the ends and new sleves and nuts and I have a good starting point.
Connections at fuel rail are 14mm Bosch fittings. Speedflow sell adaptors to convert these to -6AN
So some -6 braided hose and -6 to -5 reducers and voila!
As ive removed the carbon canister the 3rd line isnt used, not sure what Ill be doing with this yet, whether its ok to just block it off completely or if i need to put a filter on to let it breathe? Any BTDT?
Also, had to modify one of my gearbox mounts, as when I mocked them up i forgot the linkage, and one of the bolts hits the ball joint. Knew there would be a reason for the OEM cast ones only picking up on 3 bolts!
Thats all for today, planning at somepoint this weekend to connect the crank trigger to the ecu and check if im getting a decent signal and adjust it as required, then crack on with it. I want to hear this thing fire before christmas at the very latest.

Needs to breathe afaik, you can remove the hardline all the way back to the tank and them vent it out the boot side flaps or wherever suits, preferable somewhere you don't smell it, or any ignition source I guess.
yup, there is a plastic flexi hose coming off the tank, which is the vent. you reroute it out the vents behind the rear bumper and put a filter on it
Looks like its all coming together nicely now mate. Where did you find the -5 tube nuts? I struggled to get any as I was planning on doing the same thing coming off the stock 8mm fuel lines and going into AN
Just got them them through work, less than a quid each.
can get them from LAS aero, part numbers AN818 for nuts and AN819 for sleeves. Then dash number for diameter and D suffix if you want aluminium, eg AN818-5D for an aluminium -5 tube nut.
No worries Alex, you can prob get them through speedflow too but at a higher price more than likely....
As for time frame, no real deadline other than to have it fire before christmas. Biggest problem is time and money of course, Ive got lots of studying and exams I want to do next year so its going to be dribs and drabs. Once ive heard it run of course the motivation will be there to get it done.
Biggest expenses I can see coming are plumbing for power steering lines, hoses for radiator plumbing and sorting the brakes. I still need to find a suitable master cylinder and booster. I know theyre out there but I just havent bothered looking, the last one I got ended up being useless due to confusion with the seller, I wanted a vacuum booster from a V6 and ended up with the exact same hydro booster which is also fitted to the 4v V6s so that was a waste of time.
Also, the whole interior is 200 miles away so that needs moving when im done wiring and whatnot.
Well we all know 80% of the fun is the trials and tribulation of trying to put something back together that you had only half an idea of what you were doing when you started, Love it....
Its either gone in the bin or been misplaced or left in the lockup during moving house / jobs.
Could have had the car started today if it wasnt for that setback.
Instead ive Run new starter and alternator 12v feed and starter solenoid, ran through an existing hole in firewall above brake pedal, protected edges with grommet strip so no sharp edges. Power feed to fusebox runs down left side of car and is spliced into original feed from battery. Starter alternator feed is run from battery in lh side of boot, along back of fuel tank in boot, over rh wheel arch and down that side of the car under carpet.
Done power feeds and relays for injectors, fuel pump, ignition coils, ECU power, and intake switchover. To be honest id half a ssed some of this before, but now its done properly and tidied up. Fuel pump relay is above LH rear wheel arch, and ECU and Coil relays are under rear seat.
Update, engine and gearbox are in, went in last weds actually, but ive been studying for a licence exam I had today. So now thats out of the way I can carry on with the coupe.
So my gearbox mounts were 90% perfect, the LH one was spot on but the right needed a small spacer between it and the subframe for it to support the GB. All bolted in now though, very please with that. Although my subframe or sump still needs a little more hacking, as its sitting on one of the sump bolts. May have to cut and plate the subframe for it to clear properly.
Also swapped the drive shafts with the S2 ones.
Took a trip back up north last weekend and found my input harness so that was a relief, although i was a bit gutted to find out my black carpet has been skipped.
I didnt get any pics last week as we were rushed for time but Ill try to get some today or tomorrow.
