Good call, thanks, new seal and instant gasket it is then.

I will be a bit grumpy if I have to take it straight back off again.

Ok, will have a poke, certainly cant do it any harm

It did appear to be working ok, could communicate via vag com (aside from the car not starting) until I got into the fuse box, hence I suspect I wrecked it.

          Cheers Kit.

Local motor factor was kind enough to get me a a water pump, and drop it off at work

          Back here again so soon

Put everything back together, added water and immediately started dripping.

If you look very closely you will see the water pump o ring sticking out between the water pump and the block

So took it all apart again (I am getting fast at 3b timing belts ), back together and no leaks so far.

Snapped my 1/2" extension, really need to just buy a 3/4 bar and sockets as required.

Was not able to run it up to temp due to noise at night so got the front end back on again. Leak tested the intake, and fixed 1 major, and a few minor leaks. Plumbed the breather back into the intake.

So hopefully tomorrow bleed the coolant system, and sort bulbs (1 main beam, one tail light cluster (corrosion?) and 2 dodgy indicators.

              Cheers Tim.

She is not done leaking yet, tried today and foaming out the hose connection at the back of the block.

She is sounding nice and sweet, oil pressure is good.

No water temp on the dash.

Got all the rear bulbs working (swapped in a new bulb holder I got from Bo ages ago, plus new bulbs), new ns main beam headlight bulb.

OS wing indicator is not flashing, no front fogs either.

Can you monitor coolant temp in vag com without the MFTS?

Not entirely sure tbh I've had a look through the wiring diagrams but can't seem to find which switch the ECU gets its info from, maybe someone else can shed some light.

vagcom monitors the sensor at the back of the head which is used for the ECU. Multi sensor just does dash readout AFAIK!

Good efforts getting it stripped n fixed so quick!

Yes, coolant temp in Vagcom is taken from the white sensor on the back of the head. MFTS does dash temp and reduces boost if engine gets too hot.

                      Great, thanks.

At least I can keep an eye on it when running up to temp until the MFTS is sorted (new plug and pins were fitted, but I have a few MFTS kicking about, and not sure of a way to test them? Might try a cup of boiling water?

                        Water leak cured.

                        New coolant flange, new MFTS.

                        Coolant flange fitted.

Larger hose for the larger outlet

Ran the car up to temperature, and got the air out, no water leaks, fan kicks in. Still no water temp on the dash, so need to check wiring again

Got the rear number plate lights working, new bulbs and ran an earth to the body, there was no continuity between the earth in the loom to the lights and the body?

Drove her out the garage for the first time in ages!

Gave a quick hose down to get the dust off. The paint on the roof is trashed, looks like its been sanded. Before the car came off the road they was a patch in the middle that looked like that, now all over. I assume a poor blow over in the past.

Head studs re torqued now it has been heat cycled

So was going to phone for an MOT tomorrow, however she is now not starting consistently, sometimes spins for ages and will only start with throttle, and is then lumpy idle/unwilling to idle at all. Other times first straight up and idles perfect

Some times no fault codes (ignoring ecu, I assume checksum?), sometimes as below

Could I be one tooth out?

Nice one Andy, another 3B will live on

If the fault is intermitant and she's running ok once you've got her started then I doubt your a tooth out with the timing, no harm in double checking it though, are your earths to the inlet manifold etc good?

I fitted one of Rustys alloy coolant flange's to mine, it's a nice product, if you need any water hose's I have various good ones from mine going spare, their all being replaced with black Samco's.

I want to makes sure she will idle ok for the MOT man, or I doubt he will be very happy

Should I be pushing the car forward or back in 1st or reverse to take up the slack correctly?

I have been pushing it backwards each time in forwards or reverse to make it turn either way, but that will not be accurate one way?
