Oil recommendations and questions here - The Definitive S2 Oil thread
At the oil temps you are mentioning, I would say 5w-30 is the best grade, but it's likely to drink that quicker than 5w-40 or 10w-40.
Cheers

It's tricky. If you go for the 5w-30, it will use more I expect, but it's the right oil for the temps you are getting. 5w-40 and 10w-40 are going to be a little thick, but they won't get consumed as quickly.

Castrol Edge, Mobil 1, Redline, Millers CFS, Fuchs Pro S, Motul 300V and Gulf Competition are as good or better than the Amsoil.

Hi Oilman, I've been reccommended to use 15w40 Valvoline in my Audi Coupe Quattro 7A engine, which is completely standard with 123k miles.
Last service was in October and the oil was changed to 10w40 (I don't know which brand) Engine became very tappety and smokey after some spirited driving and has used quite a lot of oil since the service, The oil colour has gone very black in just over 1000 miles. I thought the cold weather may be partly to blame as I was doing lots of short trips with the car but allowing time for the engine to warm up properly and keeping revs very low.
Car will get an oil change and filter check/change on Monday
A lot of 10w-40 oils are pretty basic so that could by why the oil isn't doing very well. I'm not sure which Valvoline you mean as they make a few, but if it's a 15w-40, it's likely to be a basic oil. I'd try a decent 10w-40 first of all, something like the Fuchs XTR, Millers XSS or Motul 6100 and see if it's any better with that.
Cheers
Tim

Hi oilman, I was wondering if you have a recommendation for the best oil to use in a rear torsen diff?
(torsen type rear diff originally fitted to early '90's Audi 'V8' (D1 Typ 44) to be installed in an Audi S2 coupe).
These diffs can run very hot especially with track use (which will occur occasionally) so I believe that normally a heavyweight oil is recommended. . . specifically though I was wondering if you knew what type of Redline gear oil would be best in this application - one of their normal gear oils? (and what viscosity?) or their Heavy Shockproof Gear Oil ?
As the torsen diff works on friction between gears, would the shockproof oil be a bad idea because it is:
Not recommended for most synchro applications due to the product's extreme slipperiness [because its] friction modifiers provide additional slipperiness to lower operating temperatures by reducing the sliding friction in hypoid gears
