I decided to fit my spare front subframe so I can drop the car on the lift and make it easier to remove the rear struts and subframe. However, when I offered it up to the car I could see it was out of true and I couldn’t get the bolt holes to line up. This subframe had come off the crash damaged Avant I bought last year and I did think it was a little mangled.
So. Onto plan B. There is more than one way to skin a cat.


Plan B worked.




And this is a bonus. A powerflex rear bush.

The drain plug is looking sorry for itself.
Someone has been at it with a chisel in an attempt to remove it.
This is after a clean up.


I did try to remove in the conventional way but it wasn’t budging.

So, my tried and trusty welder comes out.


And out.


Threads are all good for a new plug.


I don’t think the oil has been changed for a while.

It's always satisfying when you crack a stubborn bolt. The combo of a decent purchase and the heat from the weld works wonders ..
I didn't realise Avant rear subframes were anything like the coupe one?

Do you think the oil has ever been changed. Are they one of the oils that is classed as "sealed for life" Life being about 7 years and 100K miles

Possibly not.

It must have been topped up at some point as it’s been leaking for a long time and there was more than a litre in it.

Anyway, gave it a good scrub.

I've drained it and have Castrol gl4 oil to go in. I used it in the Avant and it's good stuff.

Is it easy to refill or another pig of a job like the bleeding the clutch. What weight gl4 do you use 80W-90?

It's not too difficult. There are two drain plugs and they don't tend to seize like the diff. There is one fill plug just next to the nearside drive shaft output. Check you can get that open before you drain.
The oil is 75w/90 fully synthetic gl4 and has the vw 501 50 approval.
You must use a GL4 oil in the gearbox otherwise the sulphur attacks the brass synchros.
Rear diff you can use a GL5. I use EP90 Morris gear oil in the diff as I have a 25ltr drum of it here for the tractor
