got 2 packages today - rods from Aron for my 20vt build - cheers dude

and the final batch of shiney new stainless boltsd and hose clips bits so I can bolt the final few bits and pieces back on the engine and gearbox:


Got a bit of work done last night so most of the engine bay ancilliaries are back together - i really need a new expansion tank now - that thing is an embarrassment



Hopefully getting the engine and gearbox back in tomorrow

Well piss poor luck for me

Engine back in but two major show stopping problems discovered this moring that mans the car isn't going anywhere.


Big coolant leak from the replacement rad i bought off another forum member
Cracked oil stat housing


Engine ran up fine, got over 2 bar oil pressure from cranking without the plugs in and fuel pump disabled, then started after swapping a dodgy crank reference sensor over.

So no ADI for me this year, gutted isn't the word

Bit of an update.

Got the oil and coolant leaks sorted - new Behr rad and replacement oil thermostat housing off Ross. Thanks dude

Engine was running a bit lumpy and really down on power, so had a quick check and had forgotten to connect the lead to injector no. 3
Sorted that out and its now running sweet as a nut, pulls stronger than the old engine, probably due to slightly better compression. Also much quieter at the top end so really pleased with that. Need a new expansion tank me thinks



Pretty sure I've got the only 6spd CQ out there now
Bad news is that the gearbox I fitted has a bearing on the way out - got a constant whine on and off the power regardless of gear, and road speed dependant.
From a bit of research some of the bearings on the output shaft are mega expensive, doing a full set of bearings and syncros is about £1k in parts
So I think at some point I'll pull the engine and gearbox out again and open up the box and see whats what. If it looks like it worth rebuilding i'll do it... if not find another box time

Off to Oulton Park next Friday so looking forward to that, hopefully get some vids

Cheers Mark. I saw that thread and emailed JHM to see if they could get hold of bearings cheaper than the dealer, the DVD looks uber useful. I'm going to get a copy since even if i have to get another box i'm gonna pull it part to check it over before i fit ti, such is the PITA of having to tear the car apart again

MMM, that engine bay is looking well maintained.

Did the "new" gearbox eliminate the on/off clunk?

yeah, the driveline feels loads tighter, oddly i also found out just before i took the old engine out that a chipped ECU I tested for Spink took loads of shunt away, haven't got a clue why though
I also checked the backlash on my TORsen diff - turns out it was well in spec, so I removed the poly diff bush and went back to stock and its much more civilised
