  • Both you guys are making lovely welds on the alloy. What sort of material thickness and current settings a.c. balance etc are you using.

    • Best advise I got for welding ali is clean, clean and then clean some more! I have a dedicated set of stainless wire brushes just for this job, Scotchbrite is also good. I also use stainless wire wool to clean the TIG rod, then finally wipe down with acetone. You really can tell the difference, the weld pool does not appear to have as much crap in it and the weld finishes much shinier

        I use 3 mm wall thickness.
        AC balance depends on the material I weld, how clean it is, usually 27-37 EP(73-63 EN)
        Frequency from 80-150 Hz, again depends on material thickness and joints.
        110-160 AMPS
        And yes, ALU needs to be as clean as possible.

          Des, I'm really no pro with this, and not sure about the frequenzy, but seems that when dropped a bit, sounds not so nice and smooth, then it breaks the oxide layer better. Almost all parts in this IM are 3mm and I have been using about 160 amps on long runs, but need to drop down to maybe 120A, or even 100A when the whole piece is hot enough. You can easily see when it starts to melt faster and easier, but you can also compensate it with faster speed, to some point. Now I have been welding with a gray color electrode and with 2,4mm alu-rods. Could use even thicker rods, because those dissapear very fast.

          Quite happy with these welds.

                • Recieved a small package from FCP engineering today. Some bits for my 7A head. Supertech Inconel exhaust valves, stiffer valve springs and titanium retainers and also beefier JE 22mm piston pinns for my Ross pistons. Hope to get back my block from the machine shop any day, have been there for 3 weeks already. They are busy with all summer race/track engines...

                      • Yes, he's the quality checker.

                        Some bits arrived also today... K&N air filters, big one for turbo intake and smaller for supercharger intake. INA tensioner(Fiat) and pulley(MB) for the SC belt. UrS6/A6 new Hella corners and glasses.
